BFP!

So DH and I were not trying at all for a baby, but I got a BFP last Friday.  My cycle has been so off since January that I didn't even think I was ovulating anymore since I no longer get periods, but apparently I ovulated this month.  Anyways, I felt sick on Friday morning and decided to take a pregnancy test.  It came out very faint but positive.  My OB wanted me to get my betas done right away to make sure I wasn't pretty far along.  I went to have labs done that afternoon and the urine test came back negative for pregnancy.  I was really confused, but I was told that HPTs, especially First Response is much more sensitive than their inexpensive urine tests.  My beta came back at only a 12.  I was told that I could literally be in my first week of pregnancy.  I know that the only time I could have gotten pregnant this month was two weeks ago to the day.  A 12 beta score indicates the first week of pregnancy.  I was told that I probably ovulated around 3 days after, and that it probably took another 6 days for implantation, hence the low beta score.  I went hope and bought a cheap pregnancy test and a digital one, which both came out negative on friday night.  This morning, however, they both turned positive instantly.  From your experience, does this sound like a viable pregnancy or an early miscarriage?  I've never heard of anyone getting that low of a beta number.  I go back for another blood draw on tuesday, but I was told that it was a good sign if I had a positive HPT using a digital because apparently they are less sensitive.

Re: BFP!

  • Why are you asking here?  Shouldn't you ask your doctor???

  • I have never met my new OB.  Since we moved, I finally got referrals to one and have been waiting 3 months to get in to see her.  I had an appt scheduled for next week for an annual, but now that I'm pregnant, she wants to hold off on seeing me until 8 weeks.  I've never had betas done before and I'm hoping to get to speak with the dr. on tuesday after I have my labs drawn.

I have never met my new OB.

These directly contradict each other.  First of all, you say went to get labs done on the advice of your OB and the urine was negative.  "Labs" would have to have been blood if you got a beta of 12. Urine doesn't show beta.

Then you say you've never had betas done and you've never met your OB.

Also, only the mysterious OB can peg that down if the pregnancy is viable.  And he can't even do that until much later than your second beta.

How would she want you to get betas done right away to see if you are "very far along", and then tell you she doesn't want to see you till 8 weeks???

Also, you cannot date a pregnancy via betas, since they vary by a huge amount.

  • Sounds to me like you are in the very early stages. I think if I remember correctly, your betas have to be 20-25 or above to be considered a pregnancy. When I was going through a m/c the first one came back a little above 25 & the next draw was 12 or under I think. 0 a few days later. If you are testing + immediately with the hpt now, I would think you are doing good!! Congrats :)

  • I'm really sorry.  I didn't mean for this to be a contradicting post.  I got a positive HPT on friday morning.  I called the OB's office...the one I haven't met, but had an appt with.  The nurse called me back and said that because I haven't had my period in such a long time, the OB wanted me to get my betas checked.  My OB did not do the lab work.  I went to a lab, where the nurse later called me with the results.  They also wanted a urine test done at the lab, which was negative.  However, I had had a positive HPT that morning.  I have never had my betas checked with my last two pregnancies because my previous OB never ordered them.  That's what I meant when I said I had never had my betas checked before. If I did have them checked, it was with routine blood work at about 8 weeks and I was never aware of the results.  I don't have a mysterious OB.
  • I don't really know anything about betas- however if you are very early in pg then often the hpt will only work in the am.

It sounds to me like you are in the very early stages.  Hopefully things go well.  Good luck!

  • I say your not pregnant, because surely if you were you would never had the patience to explain your "contradicting" posts in such a calm and understanding matter.  In early pregnancy, I would have freaked the f out on anyone questioning my anything.

    But, what do I know.

    Good luck!

  • I call him a mysterious OB because I have never heard of an OB having someone get lab work without having at least had them be seen once.  Seems a little unusual.  Even a midwife or an nurse practitioner to see you... but someone.

Best thing to do is kick back with some buttered popcorn and watch TV or something and then get the next beta done.  Anything else will only make you go gray.

I do hope it works out for you.

  • Lol bebemama.  I just felt bad because I didn't want to sound like I was making up a bfp and I honestly have never had to worry about betas in the past and was hoping to get some insight from people on here.
  • Congrats! Faint positives are common when it's really early. I think most preg tests read a beta above 5. Definitely sounds like you are pregnant.

  • I got my BFP at 8DPO, and betas drawn at 9DPO. My level was an 8. The nurse completely freaked me out b/c she kept talking about a chemical pregnancy, blah blah blah, b/c she didn't realize how early I was. Jack was born 9 months later. Sounds like you're pregnant! Did your dr send you for another draw to see if they're doubling?
  • Congrats!  My guess is that you are just really early in pregnancy!

  • Thanks.  I have them checked again in the middle of next week to see if they are doubling.
  • Congrats!! I'd guess you're very early into your pregnancy and that's why the tests keep going back and forth. GL!

  • Congrats, no real advice but I also had my beta's drawn without seeing a dr  or nurse.  They just called in to have them done, there was nothing they could tell me until they were back and even at that all they did was tell me I was pregnant and they would see me at what was approximately 8 weeks.
