I am 16 weeks and I just read in one of my many books that at 16 weeks you should not sleep flat on your back, or even just lay flat on your back anymore. I don't see my dr for 2 more weeks. I was just wondering about others experiences with this.
The "ideal" position you will usually hear about is on your side, preferably your left side. I was always a stomach sleeper and it was hard for me to train myself to sleep on my sides. I slept on my back up until about 24 weeks or so. My OB said it was fine this early and that I would wake up or my body would tell me the position was no longer comfortable when it was time to swtich. Don't stress about it too much.

I still sleep on my back a bit...rotate between that and on my sides. There are some nights on my back is too uncomfortable, so I don't do it. Other nights, it's the only way I can fall asleep. Just listen to your body.

If you lay right on your back it can lose circulation to the baby. I stopped laying on my back around 14 weeks. I sleep on both my sides at night only.
i sleep on both of my sides because i also read not to sleep on your back. I get in my snoogle and make sure the long part is against my back so that i cant completely roll over flat on my back.
I still usually feel completely normal on my back. Some people experience shortness of breath, tingling extremeties, a general "off" feeling, and those are all signs to stop. In general, your body will let you know if you're doing something wrong though.

Left side is best... blah, blah, blah. I flip between sides. I bought a Snoogle and it keeps me comfy on either side, but I still wake up on my back occasionally. I've never had any sob or tingling, numb extremeties. Like PP's -- your body will let you know.

our lamaze teacher was just saying tonight that sleeping on your back is fine as long as you have something to leverage your right hip up to keep baby off your main atery. She was saying they use an iv saline drip bag in the hospital so it can be something quite small.
I just wedge a pillow under my hip if I wake up and find myself on my back, sleeping only on your hip can become quite painful after a while anway.
Don't worry too much about it, your body will take care of itself in these cases!
Re: sleep positions??
Listen to your body, it will tell you when it is no longer okay to sleep in a certain way because it will become uncomfortable.
Until then, sleep however you can and want.
