What did you wear in the hospital?

I'm going shopping tomorrow for a few comfy things for the hospital. What did you wear during the day/when people were coming to visit in the hospital?

I'm going to buy a new robe (only have huge terrycloth ones, want a light cotton one) and a new pair of pjs or two (like pants and tanks). What else should I have with me for during the day?

Any other advice on clothing items for the hospital is appreciated!! Thanks!!

  • I have been living in yoga pants and nursing tank tops. Wore them in the hospital too.
  • I wore nursing gowns.  You get checked so frequently that pants might be a pain.  Especially after #2 when I ended up having a c-section.  I would have been scared to wear pants b/c of the incision.  I got nursing gowns at motherhood maternity that came with lightweight robes.  I didn't put on normal clothes until I left....but if you're up for it, I'd go with yoga pants and tanks.  Don't forget slippers for walking around!
  • I wore the hospital gowns, but brought a light robe from Target and a pair of flip flops for walking around.  My hospital gave me non-skid socks, but those were too hot and a lot of water I retained during PG had pooled in my ankles, making the socks too uncomfortable to wear.  I wore yoga pants, a hoodie, and nursing tanks on the last day in the hospital.

  • I wore a pink, light night gown with pink slippers during labour. I wore pj bottoms and a loose t-shirt around the hospital afterwards until we got discharged. To be honest, I wasn't even thinking about what I was wearing, too much else on my mind!
  • I bought a robe and comfy jammies, and all I wore was the nice butt out hospital gown.  They recommended that I wear the gown so I didnt ruin the new stuff - they were right. Lots of fluids and yucky stuff!
  • The first day I wore the hospital gown, which during labor is all I was allowed to wear at my hospital. Day 2 I was still in the hospital gown, but I was also still hooked up to an IV and a PCA. (Had a c/s). Day three I was sooooo happy to change into a pair of sweat pants and a tee-shirt.

I wouldn't pack anything you wouldn't want ruined though, just in case - and a helpful hint someone told me: pack a few plastic grocery bags to throw anything "yucky" in.

  • Thanks for all the ideas and advice, especially on the yucky stuff. Maybe I'll just buy a new robe and use older pj pants that I have.

Do you recommend low rise undies or granny panties? Or maybe both since I don't know if I'll have a c-section incision to deal with or not?

Use the mesh cotton panties the hospital provides. I actually loved them, and stole a clean pair to take home (they go through the was just fine!) :)  I packed a few pairs of granny panties and never even took them out of my bag,

  • i wore the hospital gowns with my own light weight robe
  • I used the hospital attire but had my own flip flops.  I used the hospital gown and then I used a second one as a robe....  No sense bleeding on your new stuff....  And after labor and delivery, I lost all modesty I ever had.   If people visited, they saw me at my finest :)

this! i just threw away my last pair and shed a tear.

i just wore a hospital gown the whole time with a nursing tank under. i had a third degree tear with muscle tear and i saw no need to mess up my own clothes!

I brought stuff but ended up with a c-section and opted to wear the hospital gown the whole time with a light weight robe over it.  It was easier as I was always being checked and for going to the restroom.  I brought slippers to walk the hall and used those.  I also brought some tanks for under the gown and wore one like the last day only.  I wasn't as mobile though due to the c-section, so yoga pants might have worked and been nice had I not had an incision.  They also put a binder around my belly which I loved and took a couple home with me and am still wearing, really keeps things from jiggling and provides support, plus I think my stomach is going down faster due to it.  If they provide that, I'd take them up on it.  I noticed the ones my hospital gives out are also for sale at BRU for like 29.99.
  • I wore the hospital gown most the time. I had DS on Friday then a lot of people came to visit Saturday so I showered and put some comfy pants on and a nursing tank then Sunday I just wore the gown again. I brought much more than I used. Good luck!
  • The first day I just wore the hospital gown and I'm glad I did.  I went through like 4 of them since I was bleeding so bad.  If there were no visitors I just wore my nursing bra and those lovely mesh undies and when people were there I wore yoga pants and nursing tanks.

  • Just wore the gowns at the hospital because the nurses need to check you quite often. I would take a robe to wear over the gown, warm socks and slippers. Then just take some yoga pants and a nice comfortable shirt to wear home.

  • I wore yoga pants and a nursing tank.  I was only there for one day after delivery.

I had a c/s so mostly wore the hospital gown.  But, definitely was glad I bought a lightweight gapbody robe for less than $40.  I wore it all the time while pregnant, at the hospital and now.  A really good investment.  Other than that, just wore maternity yoga pants the last day or two in the hospital.  Good luck!

I had all these clothes packed for the hospital and never wore any of them.  I wore a hospital gown in front and one for a robe the enitre time.  It really worked out b/c they checked me a lot and I bleed all over them.  When I left the hospital, I wore yoga pants, a tank top (not a nursing one) and a hoodie.

I did wear my slipper socks in the hospital b/c my feet were cold and I walked the halls some.  I also loved the mesh undies, thought they were super convienent and stole some for home use too!!

  • gauchos and nursing tanks.  i bought a robe and only wore it for about 10 minutes (labor was very fast, i might have used it if it was slow).  the hospital gown was huge on me and i thought it was a pain to nurse in.  i didn't have a lot of bleeding, so nothing was ruined.

    loved the mesh undies also.

  • I wore the ugly hospital gown. I'm definitely doing things differently this time. I want to get some nice pajamas to wear.

  • I just wore the hospital gown. I was a mess and glad I didn't wear any of my own stuff. There is do much leaking and yckiness going on, you will not wnt pants until you go home. I was in bed with a blanket over most of me anyway, so I didn't care what I was wearing when people visited. You're in the hospital, you just had a baby, no one else will care either. I did shower and put minimal makeup on though to feel human.
