blocked duct... help!

I have a blocked duct in my left boob. I've done the warm compress, massaged in a hot shower, and continued pumping.  This is Day 3 and I can't take it anymore. I've gotten some small pieces of dried milk out of my nipple but I still don't feel relief.

I can feel the lump in my boob and the skin over it is all red. It's so painful. I'm calling a lactation consultant today but since it's a holiday weekend I doubt anyone will be there to help.

Does anyone have any advice?

How can I tell if it is infected?

Is it safe to feed the babies milk pumped from that breast?

Re: blocked duct... help!

  • You can try cold compresses after nursing to help w/ the swelling/discomfort.  Yes, nurse from that breast as much as possible.  Drink plenty of fluids, water is best obviously.  :)  You can also take Ibuprofen to help w/ the swelling/discomfort.  I have no idea about infection; I had several clogged ducts, but I was always able to dislodge them b/f needing ATB's.  I was so scared of thrush I tried everything else first b/f resorting to ATB's.  HTH!!!

  • Sounds like you have mastitis. I would see a doctor pronto. I had it last week and am still getting over it, but the antibiotics help very quickly.

Everything I read says it's fine to continue giving the baby your milk even if the duct is infected, the infection will not be passed on to the baby. I had a blocked duct a couple days ago and just pumped a lot and put as much pressure and massage on the area as I could stand. If it isn't letting up though you definitely need to call your doctor it sounds like it may very well be infected. Take some IB Profen & call the doc :-) GL I hope you feel better soon
