Having a baby is expensive!

I always knew that having a baby is expensive, but I just got the hospital bill in the mail today and it still blew me away. $28K for a 2-day v-delivery!! Which means it would be a lot more for a 4-day c-section. I thought it would be something like $10K max expensive. Boy was I wrong! Granted, insurance hasn't paid their part yet, but I didn't even know that they could charge that much for l&d! Even after insurance pays their %, I think I'll still end up with a fairly high out-of-pocket bill since the total amt is so hefty!

  • I don't even look at those numbers!  I just wait for the insurance to come through to tell me how much I owe.

I don't know how people w/o insurance do it!

  • Oh my!  That is insane!
  • Oh yes... I just posted about this!  My co-pay was about $1300, and my bill was *only* $13,000 for a regular delivery.  Crazy.

Ohh, my bad! I haven't looked through all the posts on TB since I realized that all the BR posts have moved over. But I just found it! Looks like we're on the higher end compared to most people =/ Although I prefer your $13k over my $28k =P

They also charged separately for mom & baby. It was $22k for me, $6k for baby. The "pharmacy" portion was $1300 for me and $50 for the baby. I wonder if my $1300 also includes the teeny weeny sample lanolin tube they gave me...

My co-insurance is 20%. I don't want to pay 20% of $28k! Crying but I think I'd reach my annual max first, which is $4k...still pretty hefty...

  • It's nuts.  DH and I are pretty good savers, thankfully, but I know many people who wouldn't be prepared for those kinds of bills!  We always loved having the PPO plan, but now we're rethinking it. ((SIGH))

  • yeah i saw that prev. post and never go to reply to it! our bill was sooo expensive...i mean, i know i ended up with a c/s and stayed 4 nights in the hospital but we had to pay $500 for the hospital stay plus %20 of the bill...and for both of us it ended up being close to $4k that we owed!!!! i mean i guess i shouldn't complain b/c DH's insurance allows both myself and the baby to be added for FREE, but still... that's a lot of money!
  • Stuff like this makes me so glad we have universal health care and didn't have to worry about insurance. Indifferent I never even saw an estimate of how much it cost, and I wouldn't want to - between my c-section, epidural headache, twin babies and staying in the hospital for 7 days, I'm sure it was a TON!
