anyone measuring small from mid pregnancy?

at my 28 week appointment (two days ago) the doctor told me that my fluids were low and the baby's measurements and weight (2 pounds) meant she was only in the 2nd percentile for size. I was told to go home and drink a lot of water to see if my fluids would improve. back at the hospital today, an ultrasound showed perfect fluid levels, which is great. however, they now need to figure out why she is so small. for now, i'm just resting and drinking  a lot of water/eating a lot of protein. my appointment with the specialist is Wednesday. they will monitor me and then, if she doesn't appear to grow, they can deliver her early and help her gain weight on the outside.

the thing is, they can't figure out what is causing her to be so small. neither my husband nor i were small babies. i have gained a normal 20 pounds so far and my blood pressure is normal as well (102/50). blood flow from the placenta appears to be normal, and all of her vital signs (heart rate, non stress test, etc) come back fine. we're still waiting on the results of my glucose test.

anyway, i am happy that she seems to be healthy otherwise, and that they are monitoring her. i just feeling a little nervous and frustrated that we don't have a diagnosis or anything we can do. did any of you experience this? what were your experiences? was there a positive outcome? i have heard some encouraging stories, and it does make me feel better.

thank you, and best of luck to everyone on here!

Aidan was born at 28 1/2 weeks and weighed exactly 2 lbs.  My cord had reverse flow, meaning that it would flow to a certain point and then come back to me instead of going to Aidan.  He then had a massive brain bleed and that's why he didn't make it.

Good luck and I hope she keeps growing

During my pregnancy, I was working with midwives, so my last ultrasound was at 20 weeks. At that time, they didn't mention anything about DD measuring small. When my water broke at 34 weeks, they did an u/s at the hospital to check on her and she was so tiny, they pulled out all my files to determine her real GA...they thought she could be as young as 28 weeks. She weighed in at 3lb 12oz when she was born, at the 3rd percentile for her GA. She came out breathing room air, though, and has done fine since. She was small for her age for a long while while we were having BM supply issues, but now she's on formula cut to 24cal/oz and she's catching up! Just because you were both average sized babies doesn't necessarily mean anything. DH and I were both in the 7-8lb range, but we're both small (I'm 5'1", he's 5'6", and the tallest of our parents is my dad at 5'8"), so our neonatologist thinks she was just destined to be small. They never found a reason for my pPROM or her IUGR. GL!

At my 26 week appt, my fundal height started to drop. By 32 weeks my fundal height was only 27 weeks and an u/s revealed that Nolan was measuring 3 weeks behind. My fluid levels were fine, but the cord flow was reversing. They estimated his size to be 3lbs 7 oz and he was delivered that day at 3lbs 4 oz. I have to tell you though, between my u/s 32w1d and the u/s at 32w5d when I delivered things got a lot worse. At the first u/s the cord flow wasn't that bad and they said I would make it to 35/36 weeks. 4 days later, they did the u/s and sent me immediately to the OR. Luckily I had steroid shots between the 2 u/s and Nolan was born screaming and breathing room air from the start.

    Good luck! Keep us updated!

ETA - I should also mention that DD was born full term at 6lbs 1 oz, which I was told is right at the 10th percentile. She was over 50th for height though and doubled her weight in 8-9 weeks. I know my fundal height was measuring off a bit with her (although not nearly as bad as with DS) but my u/s all showed that she was healthy, but small. They never did give me a weight estimate at those u/s, but I was told many times that she was just a small baby.

Both my kids had IUGR. DD was tiny! She was born at 26 weeks and weighed 1lb 4oz, which is closer to the ize of a 23-24 week old baby. DS was also small at 4 lb 13 oz, born at 35 weeks 2 days. I did have pre-eclampsia with both my kids, but with DS he was doing great with growth until 32 weeks and then he basically stopped growing. My blood flow to the placenta was great and my BP was fine until the week before I delivered, he just decided he was done growing. He is 6 weeks old now and has alread doubled his weight, so he has had no problems growing outside the womb :)! Good luck with your little one!

thank you so much for sharing your stories. ladies with cord blood flow going in the wrong direction, could they pick that up on the ultrasound? or was there a different test for that? i was told the blood is flowing fine, but i don't know anything about what direction its going in. how do they measure that?

Elena was my IUGR baby. She was born at nearly 34 weeks weighing 3lbs 1oz, the size of a 30-31 week baby. She had some breathing issues and feeding issues but she is thriving today! She's doing so well and is almost 9 pounds now!
