hoag vs. mission hospital

hello! i'm newly pregnant w/ my first and am trying to decide between seeing an OB affiliated w/ hoag or w/ mission hospital. i know lots of ladies who have delivered at hoag but mission is right down the street from me.

does anyone have any suggestions, a list of pros/cons, or recommendations on which hospital is better?

 thank you everyone!

Re: hoag vs. mission hospital

  • I was talking to someone today who delivered at Mission (twice) and said she had a great experience both times.  She recommended it.  If you live that close to it, you'll be a lot happier delivering there than having to drive all the way to Hoag when you're in labor.

  • I absolutely loved my Hoag experience (despite some scares w my LO which didn't have anything to do w the hospital) but have heard good things about Mission. I think it's more important to pick a doctor that you like and feel very comfortable with for your prenatal care than what hospital they are affiliated with. Both are excellent hospitals.

  • I live in between Mission and Saddleback.  To be honest - I have never heard one good thing about Mission (hence I choose Saddleback).  On that note, I have heard nothing but great things about Saddleback . . . not sure if that is an option for you.

  • Just delivered at Mission and had a wonderful experience! It's the closest hospital to me too and glad it is. ?Everything was great and all my visitors had nothing but positive things to say as well! :)
  • I just had my first appt at Mission Hospital yesterday (I live like 5 minutes from it) and really enjoyed my doctor and my experience.  I have heard great things about both locations but like you I am so close to Mission Hospital that it just made sense to go there...

  • I delivered at Hoag while a friend delivered at Mission (like within days of each other).  She had nothing but nice things to say about Mission.  Their L&D dept is as new as Hoag's and she had a completely private room.  So all that to say, its completely up to you.  I think both hospitals are comparable.  I live in South OC, but chose to deliver at Hoag because of convinience.  I had a scheduled c-section at 38 weeks, so there was no labor scares and no worries about being 30-40 minutes away if I were to go into labor.  But the convienience part was the fact that I work in Newport, so all my drs appts were within walking distance from my work, making it super easy to sneak away for 30 minutes.  There are a ton of visits towards the end and if I had to drive to and from the appts, my work probably would have neen pi$$ed.  Plus I started bleeding early on and was able to walk to the hospital's ultrasound dept and get checked out.  Even though she told me not to walk there, come on... I am within blocks of the hospital and parking can be nuts... so I walked.  Anyways, I guess its really up to you.  If you work and live in South OC, it may be better to deliver at Mission.  Good luck and hope you have a happy and healthy pregnancy!  :)

  • I am about 30 minutes from Hoag. All my pregnant family and friends have delivered there and have raved about it. I was there recently for my best friends second delivery and they were amazing! I have no experience with Mission so I can't say anything about it. I am not super close to Hoag but the service is worth it to us.
  • I live about 15 minutes from Mission and 30 minutes from Hoag. I am delivering at Hoag because I have heard a couple negative stories about Mission. I have never heard anything negative about Hoag. Funny thing too, is my neighbors that delivered at Mission had stories to tell!! The neighbors that delivered at Hoag only say great things. Also, my OB has always been in Newport so I want to go with someone I know versus someone new.
  • I delivered at Hoag twice and have two different experiences. The first time L&D was AWESOME but mother&baby unit was awful, awful awful awful.

This time around I had a "meh" experience in L&D and a GREAT AMAZING FABULOUS experience in Mother&Baby unit.

It's all about the nurses you get.

  • I live in South County very close to Mission. Yet, ours first choice to deliver DD was Hoag, secondary would have been Saddleback. We are both in the healthcare field so we are pretty picky.
