How long did you swaddle?

I am just curious how long you MoM's swaddled your LO's.  Mine are still being swaddled, but it seems like Ava might be okay not being swaddled, although Gracie is another story.  I am wondering how long you swaddled how you stopped or when you knew it was okay to stop.  Did you just try it and it worked?  TIA

We swadded until 6-7 months.  As soon as they rolled over we took them away cold turkey.  I thought Aubrey would have a rough time not being swaddled but she totally surprised me, I hope Gracie does the same for you!

  • They started breaking out and fighting it at 4 months. I tried the sleep sacks one day and they slept much better so that was that!

  • Mine started fighting it and breaking free around week 3.  We still swaddle them from the chest down so they can sleep with their arms over their heads (they seem to love that), but it keeps their legs from going too crazy.  We plan to do that until they're rolling over.

Sometimes when they are super fussy they'll let us put them in Swaddle Me's still.

  • We're weaning them from swaddling now at 4 months. They seemed to be fighting the swaddle and both started sucking on their hands to self-soothe and would get upset when they couldn't put their hand in their mouth. We started with one arm out for one week. We are now in the 2nd week and both arms are successfully free. We are still wrapping the swaddle me around their chest - they seem to like feeling that security.

I like that idea.  Our girls like to suck on their hands too and often get one hand out and start to suck on it.  When we tried it before they kept hitting themselves in the face and waking up.  I like the idea of trying one arm out first.

  • Lennon has been unswaddled for a couple weeks. He sleeps in a sleep sack now. He can roll and was breaking out of the swaddle every night. He does fine.

Liam is still swaddled and loves it. He doesnt break out and cant roll, so I will swaddle him until that changes.

  • I stopped swaddling cold turkey when it started getting a few warmer days weather wise, so they were about 4 months old.  My daughter Brooke squirmed around a lot for a night or two, but overall it was pretty easy to stop doing it for us.
  • We just stopped swaddling this week, when the boys were just shy of 5 months. It was really warm here this week, and our AC broke, so there was no way I was going to swaddle them in their fleece swaddle halo sleep sacks. We just put them in a light cotton sleep sack and they did great. The next couple of nights, they both woke up once, but were able to go back to sleep once we gave them their paci. My boys were swaddlholics, so I was really nervous to stop, but so far so good!

  • We swaddled for just over 6m, and then weaned. We tried weaning them from swaddles a couple times from 4m on but they just weren't ready; at 6m, they didn't fight it.

  • 6mo... the last month or so we were not putting their legs into the leg pocket of the miracle blanket b/c they were too big - but we still wrapped their arms.
  • Until just before 4 months.  They were breaking out of the swaddles anyway and fighting them and wanted their hands to be able to self-soothe with sucking so we said forget it.  Also, they were rolling onto their tummies too often and we didn't want their hands getting trapped under them.  We tried transitioning from swaddling fully to one hand out for about one nap and then saw it wasn't working, went to a sleep sack, and they slept much better than they ever had before.
  • I don't have multiples, but i'm going to reply anyhow.  We stopped swaddling DS1 when he kept breaking loose, I think around 3 months.  We wrapped just his belly for awhile before switching his to a Halo Sleepsack.  And the sleepsack really helped with the transition.  DS2 is still swaddled at 3+ months, and we'll keep swaddling him until he breaks his arms out or starts rolling over.  Good luck!

  • Nathan we swaddled until 6 months.  We tried to stop swaddling Joey then too, but he was miserable up all the time throughout the night.  We tried a few times before he was ready at 7.5 months.
