Breastfeeding

baby refusing bottle after previously taking it

I breastfeed most of the time but once in a while my DH, mom, and sister have feed her a bottle of pumped breastmilk. It wasn't a problem until this week. I have to go back to work in a week and a half and she has refused a bottle yesterday and today from my husband. I've googled tricks but does anyone have any advise? I could try different bottles but they weren't a problem before.

  • DS did this too about a week before I went back. I tried giving it to him before he got really hungry and it made it easier. He still fusses at the first bottle he gets everyday but takes it. Just keep trying.

  • We had this same problem.  When LO was born, we would occaisionally give her bottles of pumped milk with no problem.  I had chosen playtex drop ins and they worked just fine.  About 2  weeks before I had to go back to work, LO started refusing the bottle.  No idea why.  We did try several different types of bottles/nipples even though they weren't a problem before and nothing seemed to help.  I was freaking out.  A couple days before I went back to work, I had to be away from LO for a significant length of time.  DH was watching LO and when he fed her a bottle, she took it easily!  It was like she knew mommy wasn't home, so the only choice was a bottle.  Can you leave the house and have DH or your mom give the bottle?

Also, fwiw, after all the bottle drama, we ended up using Dr. Browns going forward since this is the bottle DH was able to give her.  Not sure though if the bottle really made a difference.

  • I second Dr. Browns.  We had the same problem (I'll spare you the details), but after trying 8 different kinds of bottles, my daycare provider suggested Dr. Browns (which, by the way, is what we started with, and then she started to refuse it) because she said she looked "uncomfortable" when she tried to give DD a bottle and she thought it might reflux-related.  Lo and behold, after six hellish weeks and over $200 of bottles, she took right to the Dr. Browns again.  GL!

  • My baby actually refused the bottle from the start.  I kept trying and got really worried as my "return to work" date got closer.  I stared giving him the bottle every day and only offering the breast after he took at least one bottle.  The first couple days were rough, but now he takes at least 2 bottles while I am at work.  It's much easier to just nurse him, but I know I need to keep up with the bottle so he will eat while I'm gone.  It's worth a try...

  • Wow, I could have written this post. She was doing fine taking bottles, but in the last couple weeks has outright refused them.  I have three months left but I am also freaking out.  She takes Nuk pacis, so I bought some Nuk nipples and I've been trying to get her to suck on the nipples with no bottle attached, to get her used to it. My sister is coming this weekend so I'm going to have her try to give a bottle while we go out.

Another tip I got from a friend, which I haven't tried yet, is to run a hairdryer or other white noise while trying to give the bottle-- she said it made her baby calm enough to take it.  Worth a try?  Good luck and if you have any success, report back!
