Would this work? (washing CDs)

I read that you should do a pre-wash in cold, wash in hot, then an extra rinse in cold.  My washer does not have a "pre-wash" nor do any of the cycles do 2 washes.  The "Heavy" cycle on my washer goes: wash, rinse, spin, rinse, spin.  There is an option for the Heavy cycle to do "super wash" which is a 15 minute wash, then followed by 2 rinses.  Since this is an extra long wash, is it ok to skip the pre wash?  This would mean the diapers would go straight to a longer, hot wash.  What is the purpose of the cold pre-wash?  Prevent stains?  I could do a short delicate wash as a pre-wash but I'm trying to figure out a way to just put it all in the washer and leave it til they are done...I don't want to have to keep going up and down the stairs to switch from pre-wash to the regular wash cycle.  Thanks in advance!

  • The first rinse sort of gets all the yuckies/bits out before you put in the soap. Personally I think it's an important step and would do a pre-rinse and then do the heavy cycle - the length of the wash cycle isn't so much the issue as the temp and the extra rinse (for me at least, I just do a regular wash cycle).  But you could try skipping it and see how it goes.

  • mine doesn't have one either so i use the short wash on mine.  i think for you to do your delicate wash on cold and then the heavy on hot sounds good.

  • With our breastmilk poo I don't do any thing before putting them in the wash. So we do a pre-rinse to get rid of the poo (I think of it as what my parents used to do swishing in the toilet, but less gross). We then do a normal wash with an extra rinse. My washer as the rinse and spin option though, not sure what we'd do if we didn't.

  • is it an older style washer with a dial to select the wash type? My parents' is like that, and i just turn the dial to the last 1/3 of a regular wash cycle, to a spot that is at the beginning of the last rinse, then it does a spin. This is what i do for the initial rinse cycle and also if i need an extra rinse at the end.

the reason for the initial rinse is to get any poo off, as well as get some of the urine out, so the pH is better for the detergent to work.

to answer your question, it is unlikely that you will have one setting that will do everything untouched.  If you have a utility sink down in your laundry area, you could always rinse the diapers out then do your heavy wash.

Ditto. We skip the rinse when we don't have any poopy diapers (we EC), but I wouldn't have wanted to skip it before we were ECing, even with only BF poop.

Our washing machine has a "rinse/spin" setting. We run that on cold and then our "heavy" setting, which is a hot wash with two cold rinses (the same as your ). So we have to hit the "start" button twice, but it's not a big deal.

  • Thanks everyone!  I guess I now see the benefit to the pre-wash.  Our washing machine is in the basement so I was just really trying to find a way to be lazy ;)
