stripping membranes - did it start labor?

My dr offered this to me today at 37.5 weeks.   She said 2/3 of the time it gets labor started within 24hrs.  I said no I am not ready, maybe next week.  Was the 24 hr thing true for anyone here?  There's a recent post on the 3rd tri board where most replies say they had it done yesterday, with some pain and cramps and now nothing...    Tia.

  • I have to say I think that number is extremely inflated.  I've talked to lots of women about this and none of them said it started labor.

That being said- No, it did not work for me. I had it done 3 times and nothing happened at all.

  • I wouldn't have it done that early!  I had it done 3 days before my due date and went into labour less than 48 hours later. Your body still has to be ready to go into labour for it to work.
  • No. And I've never met anyone IRL that this has worked for.

  • I had mine stripped 4 times & all I got was false labor & eventually was induced. That was at 38wks +. I had a lot of bleeding after the first & by the next day I was having more & more regular contractions that got to 2-3min apart but were only lasting about 30seconds. I went to the hospital but they never got anymore than that & I was sent home. I would do it again but I think it did kinda make me get my hopes up especially when my midwives thought they did such a great job at it & kept telling me I wouldn't make it to the weekend, well I did a couple times.
  • At 40.5 weeks, I had my membranes stripped. It did nothing. When I had it done again at 41.5 weeks, my water broke within 2 hours but didn't labour on my own- needed pitocin and then a c/s.
