Anyone else with a HORRIBLE sleeper?

DS goes in spurts of sleeping ok and sleeping horribly. Naptime we used to be able to put him down and he'd play or wimper a bit and then sleep. But now it's all out cries of terror. Same with nighttime. If we don't rock him to sleep he gets so worked up.

We also used to be able to put him down after he was asleep for naps and at night. Now we so much as walk into his room with him and his eyes shoot open. What's going on? We've tried CIO, any other suggestions? Our only hope is to let him sleep with us, it's the only way we can get any sleep. But we've created an awful habit with that and we know it!

Yes! DD used to sleep great! she woudl take 2 2 hour naps each day. When I put her down, she'd go right to sleep and wake happy. Same at bedtime. Now she screams as soon as we walk into her room and go near her crib. She stands up 100x and I usually go in and lay her back down. Sometimes I let her CIO but it goes on for a while. Now, the only way I can get her to sleep at night, is to give her a bottle in her crib, whic is a horrible habit. but I'm desperate. I've pretty much given up on naps.

    I'm desperate too!

We've tried everything it seems and we're quite frankly running out of options. My only saving grace is that there aren't many kindergarteners that still sleep with their parents Smile

But seriously, anyone with experience, does it get better at any point?

  • I have a power napper but a lousy nighttime sleeper.   We co-sleep and, at the moment, her crib mattress is on the floor because it's easier to get her to sleep if I can lie down next to her.    This arrangement, doesn't bother me.  I know she's not going to be in our bed when she starts grade school.  And, while her sleep ebbs and flows, I think she'll have longer stretches as we get past teething and milestones.

That being said, two weeks ago and again last night, DD started waking up in the middle of the night ready to play.  That, I don't know how to deal with.  She's always woken a lot but been super easy to soothe back to sleep.  The playing thing is going to be the death of me.

  • Yes, but only when he's teething.  When he's not teething he's fine.  So if he's having a bad night, we let him sleep with us.  It's easier on all of us.  I really don't believe we are creating a bad habit - otherwise he'd cry for us on nights when he's feeling great, KWIM?

We've learned over the past few months that when he's teething or doesn't feel well, he wants to be with mommy and daddy... and when he feels great, he's fine on his own.  We never let him CIO.  I'm too afraid he'd be so angry that he'd be clingy and afraid of his crib.  I want him to like his crib..

We had a horrible sleeper until 3 weeks ago.  We were at our wits end.  We did the Ferber method and it was a lifesaver.F Ava has slept so much better, it is easier to get her to sleep and we are actually getting time to ourselves and sleep as well!!  It was so much easier than I thought it would be.  We do still have an issue with naps...she will only sleep in her swing.  Yes thats right, her swing.   I know is is almost 10 months old and probably should not be sleeping there but she will not nap anywhere else!!  Fortuneately she is small so she somewhat still fits in it(she hasnt exceeded the weight limit) but I don't know for how long.  We tried Ferber with naps but no luck. It's a real problem and we don't know how to fix it.

  • I feel like I should win the prize for having the worst sleeper.  DS has never been a good sleeper...ever!  He doesn't nearly sleep through the night.  He still gets up several times a night, and when he does get up, it is very hard to get him back to sleep.  After you finally do get him back, he's up again before you know it.  He HATES napping!  We're lucky to get him to take 2 little half hour cat naps a day...and that's a good day.  And when he does nap, he has to nap on you.  Don't even try to move him or he'll wake up.  It's very frustrating to say the least!
