using Selsun Blue on eczema? (long & kind of turned into a vent as well)

I don't know if I spelled that right or not, it doesn't look right to me. Oh, well.

Anyways, DD has eczema & crazy FIL is claiming that he knows someone who also has eczema & uses Selsun Blue & it clears it up. Has anyone heard of this? I'm pretty hesitant to try it, I've never used it on myself, but it seems to me that it would be pretty strong & have a lot of chemicals in it. It seems to me that it could irritate it further, no? I thought I'd ask because he's keeps asking me "Did you try it yet?" & I'm getting sick of hearing it from him. He's one of those people who gets hung up on something & that's all that you hear about every time you see them, so right now it's DD's eczema.

Actually, everyone on DH's side of the family is so overly concerened about it. Always asking how it is & whatnot, I mean I know they're doing it because they care or whatever, but I wish they'd quit making such a big deal about it. The way I see it, DD could have something way worse, many other children do. I feel that if all she has is some dry skin, we're doing pretty good.

Wow, this got really long & kind of turned into a vent too, sorry about that!

  • No - I have never heard of that before. I would call your pedi's office and ask what they recommend you use.

She gave us a whole bunch of recommendations that we are using now, but I guess that FIL thinks that it should clear up more quickly or something. I'm pretty sure that I'm not going to try it, I just thought I'd post & see if anyone else had heard of this. I'm just so sick of hearing about it from him! He just repeats himself over & over, I love him to death, but he can be a bit over the top sometimes!

I would listen to your pedi over your FIL.  Honestly, what does he know about babies skin?

  • our pedi recommended using dandruff shampoo for the boys when they had bad cradle cap... it didn't really help much and i hated the smell - so i stopped.

Yep, our pedi said we could try Head and Shoulders if it was really bothering me.  I didn't try it though.

  • I'm not sure what your pedi recommended, but ours said a light coating of 1 or 2% hydrocortisone cream, then aquaphor on top. DS had it on his thighs and I would do that every night before bed, and use just the aquaphor during the day. It helped a lot!!! Hope you can find something that works!! Oh - we also have a cool mist humidifier that we put on at night in DS's room.

DS had bad eczema for months, and finally we just started slathering him with Aquaphor after each bath, and he has been eczema-free since we started using Aquaphor.

Thanks ladies, I may have to try the Aquaphor. We've been using Aveeno & it seems to be doing ok, but she's got these two spots on her cheek that I wish would just go away! Pedi also gave us a steroid lotion to use, but I don't like using it all the time. I used it for maybe 2 weeks & I feel like we need to take a break from it. I may start using a little again in a week or so.

  • I would not use that on my son, too many chemicals.

DS's eczema protocol is as follows:

Bath every other day w/ Dove soap (we do shampoo/soap right before getting out so that he's not sitting in soapy water)

Heavy emollient cream 2x/day- we use either Vanicream or Vaseline Deep Moisture Creamy

If he's got nasty patches, then I put cortisone cream on first, then the emollient cream on top

Also, no scented soaps, lotions, etc.

  • I think your FIL has his home remedies mixed up. Selsum Blue is used to treat a skin condition called tinea versicolor a fungus that causes discoloration to the skin. It's most common in warm climates like the south and in those who are out in the sun a lot. I had this in middle/high school and used SB to treat it.

I use Aquaphor on myself and my baby...we both have very sensitive skin. Target has an up & up version btw for about half the price...It's in a white tube with a purple lid. A little goes a long way so it should last you a long while. HTH. GL.

  • My DD has these stubborn eczema spot on her cheek too!  Last night she woke up scratching her arms like crazy.  Feel so bad for her.  We've tried almost everything out there.  There should be an eczema/allergy board.. more of a support group!!  :(
