Adoption

Newbie with Fundraising Q.

Hi girls!
I'm new to this board and must admit I've been lurking for a bit. The hubbers and I are doing our homework now about adoption and trying to learn all that we can before we start the process. We have agreed that we would really love to try for an International adoption from the Philippines (hubbers and I are both half Filipino). Unfortunately International adpotion = $$.

My question, have any/many of you guys gone the fundraiser route for your adoptions? I've already come up with a few great (I might be biased Wink ) ideas to help raise money, but would that be considered making an additional income since technically we still benefit from it? Do I pay taxes on money made from fundraising? Any help would be great! I'm sure every state is probably different, but just an idea would help. I'm not even sure where to start looking for this information. Thanks!

Re: Newbie with Fundraising Q.

  • When I was looking at international adoption from China, the agency that I talked to had a program where you could have people donate money to them (non-profit) and then the donor got a tax write off and you got "credit" in your account.  I never explored the details of how it worked, or if it had a limit.  It was just something they had in the "welcome" packet.

  • I don't know about the laws end of it. But, we are having a fundraising garage sale this summer. We are having everyone that we know "donate" their old stuff to us. All proceeds will be directly deposited into our adoption fund account. Everyone has been told this outright so no one can confuse this as income that we would be living off of. I consider them donations and not income though. I have looked into a few more general fundraisers but haven't quite decided if we will also go that route. Good luck!

  • Hi! Will you please keep us updated on your adoption journey?  I don't know anyone who has adopted from the Philippines, but that is one of the first countries we looked at! I've been there a couple times, and really wanted to adopt from there. We just decided we wanted a younger baby though.

You should check out the fundraising for adoption Yahoo group.  You can probably get some good ideas there, and the group may be able to answer your specific questions.

I am no accountant, but I wouldn't think that taxes would be an issue unless you make a habit of claiming garage sale proceeds on your taxes.  :)

  • We didn't go the fundraising route with our IA.  It might have been a better choice as we wouldn't still be paying things off but basically we were able with our agency to pay in portions (HS first, then wait until dossier is ready and pay some more etc) so we did what we could and got some help from family who we are now paying back as we can.
  • Thanks for the insight and yahoo group suggestions; I'll definitely check them out!

My hubbers and brother are both in the music scene, so one of our ideas was to put together a show/concert. So maybe instead of "charging" for tickets, we could say it's a donation to enter. Wink Sounds like it's all a matter of wording and presentation.

crystal: I'll definitely update! We're only in the very, very begining stages of everything now; discussing, brainstorming, planning, research. I'm hoping we can start with paper work this fall though. ::fingerscrossed::

  • A friend designed some t-shirts for us and we are doing the Adoption Bug fundraiser. Yes, we do have to pay taxes on whatever money we earn from the sale of those t-shirts. We will get a 1099, or whatever the appropriate form is, at the end of the yr.
  • Not sure if you've chosen an agency already but I ran across this today and thought of you.

  • Thanks TeraandJosh! That's the kind of info I was looking for. :o)

Mcmann05: Thanks for thinking of me! That pdf has a lot of great info (and price breakdown). I'm already in love with this board; you gals are sooo helpful!
