Brita or bottled?

I LOVE my Brita filtered water pitcher and it's the only water I drink at home.  Dh prefers bottled as he says it tastes better.  I'll buy the gallon size jug to reduce the amount of plastic from the little bottles in a case but it still kills me every time.

Do I fill up the gallons at the supermarket, not tell him and see if he notices?

Out of curiousity, in this situation, how important would taste be to you?

I'd refill his gallon jugs with the Brita and not tell him.  Or, tell him that you're not being wasteful anymore and he can suck it up and drink from the Brita, perhaps with a lemon slice.

  • Honestly, I would say get over it.  There is no need for bottled water.  I love my water filter, the water tastes great.  Tell him to stop being difficult :)

  • I think water from my Brita tastes just fine! I do, however, purchase bottled water as well. Here's where taste comes in to play. To me, not every store bought bottled water tastes good. I do not like Deer Park, Dasani, Fred, Aquafina...I like Poland Spring and a few others. And of course as always, we do recycle the plastic bottles from the store bought brands. It seems as though all of the brands have been doing the whole "smaller cap = less plastic" deal which is nice! A change for the better! :)

  • Before my eyes were opened to the evils that are plastic water bottles, I LOVED Fiji water.  It tastes so crystal clear and smooth.  So, I can sort of understand where your DH is coming from, except now that I only drink filtered water, I can't really tell a difference.  Also, the trade off for having "better tasting" water really can't compare to the harm that plastic water bottles cause to the Earth.

My recommendation is to use the money angle to get your DH to switch to filtered water.  It's practically free (only need to replace filters), so you would save a ton of money.  He will get used to the taste of filtered water.  Buy him a Kleen Kanteen or something to refill.

  • Do a quick Google search on "bottled water fecal coliform".  Show him the links.  I guarantee you he won't mind switching to the Brita. :)

  • Ugh, Dobie! I am pretty sure you've fully convinced me to stick with my Brita and SIGG bottles!

LOL!  Totally gross, right?  "There's poop in your water" is probably the most convincing argument I can think of.

    Eeewww.  Thanks for the ideas!

  • Maybe try another pitcher filter system like zero water (actually gets lead out, which brita doesn't do); tastes more like fiji (or other very clean/just wet/purified water). He might like that one better. You can get it at Target (they used to have a $10 off coupon on their website, not sure now).
  • I would fill up a gallon jug with Brita and see if he notices. If he does, I'd try filling it up from the supermarket. I may be in the minority here but after living somewhere that the water tasted terribly I think taste is important.
  • Maybe he likes drinking poop...maybe that is the problem!!!
