NTTCR: Clicky poll (Controversial?)

I am reading a book about the FLDS and just got to the part where the LDS church put an end to plural marriage, so indulge me.

[Poll]

Re: NTTCR: Clicky poll (Controversial?)

  • I don't see the harm in making it legal. Just because it's allowed doesn't mean everyone is going to run out and do it. Like pot. You can legalize it all you want, I'm not going to touch it. As long as everyone is consenting, who cares. My only concern is that the children are taking care of and the mega family isn't mooching off the welfare system.

  • IMO as long as they are are okay with it and there are no little girls being brainwashed or forced to do it I don't mind it. I think what ppl do in their home is their business as long as there is no abuse and everyone is in that relationship willingly.

Didn't people in the Bible have multiple wives?

(An honest question, I thought that was as "old fashioned" as it gets!)

This EXACTLY. Alot of the FLDS polygamists are benefitting from welfare. That drives me NUTS.

  • As long as they are consenting adults (over the age os 18) who am I to judge?

Me and my BFF always joke around that my DH is her "second husband".  Her DH is not very handy around the house so she is always asking my DH to help out when needed.  Ha!

LOL yes old testament, before Jesus came

Old testament is an interesting read if you have time. There were a lot of "laws" that were enacted in the name of religion that were dispelled when Jesus came and then the New Testament was written.

The vast majority of people who get the support of welfare are not polygamists.  If you have a problem with welfare, I think that should be separated from whether this type of marriage should be prohibited.  I honestly don't see the connection.

I think that if a man wants to father 40 children he should atleast be able to support them. That is why it bugs me. When we went to colorado city, most of the women were pregnant. That is their main goal. Have huge families. One man told us that his grandfather fathered 124 children. So, if they are purposefully breeding like rabbits, they should figure out a way to pay for it. Since their marriages are private and not legalized, the women file as single mothers and therefore get the financial aid from the government. I think if people want to have plural marriages that is fine, but atleast live up to the responsibilities of it.

    this.

and i must confess i was really startled to see the goats option.  that's one of the arguments that i hear from opponents to gay marriage, and that was one of the arguments advanced from proponents to interracial marriage :(

  • The "people will soon be marrying goats" opinion drives me absolutely crazy!!  I have heard this thrown out there in discussions of legalizing gay/lesbian marriages and it makes my skin crawl.  We're talking about marriages between consenting HUMAN adults.  I don't see how a persons opinion of one human marrying another human or multiple humans has anything to do with animals!
  • LOL.. i really thought PPC threw that one in for a laugh.

I think any consenting adult should be able to marry whomever (whoever?) they damn well please. It was for a chuckle, not serious. Because it is a ridiculous argument.

That is why I used it. Too many morons think that gay marriage means people will marry their dogs next.

    Ditto.  If there's a 3rd person, then it's not a marriage!

  • I think religion and government should be kept separate.

IMO, consenting adults should legally be able to marry whomever they choose (and however many they choose) even though I may not necessarily agree with it personally.
