Trouble TTC

What size should follicles be on day of IUI?

I had an US today (cd 12) and I had 2 follies and she said they were measuing 16 each.  How big is ideal for IUI?  I know they grow 1-2 mm a day, but was wondering how big they want them to be.

RE wanted to try for a Sunday IUI because the office is closed on Mon for memorial day, but I am worried that 16 is too small to trigger tonight.

Re: What size should follicles be on day of IUI?

  • Every RE is different but mine suggests 18-24mm.

Your follies should be the right size by Sunday if they grow 1 or 2 mm by then.  Don't worry!

  • Anything over 16mm is big enough.  But, even if you trigger tonight, they probably won't be released until tomorrow, so that gives them about 2 more days to grow.

  • So when I read 18-24mm online, they are talking about the size the day of the IUI, not the day of the trigger? (which would make mine fine)
  • My RE triggers at 18, but they do keep growing after the trigger shot.

    Good luck!!!

Ideally, they are 18 when you trigger.  BUt you don't want to wait too long to trigger, so that is probably why your Dr is wanting to trigger early and do the IUI Sunday rather then try to wait it out and do it Tuesday.

They will keep growing after the trigger, so they should be 18 (or larger) by the time you do the IUI.

  • Thanks!

  • Just got off the phone with RE nurse.  Not triggering.  Now have to use opks and depending on when I get a + opk, either IUI on Sun or Tues.  If I end up getting a + opk on Sun, IUI is cancelled and we will just do TI.  Damn the office for being closed on memoral day!
  • Mine said mimimum 18.  I think it's great you have 2 follies.  I don't think 16 is too small.  They should be good for your IUI day.  Both times I've had an IUI, I've only had 1 follie.  Last time it was 23mm and it was successful. And this time 19.1 the day of the trigger.
