Needed to see one since Matthew has taken to clamping down on my nipple and shaking his head side to side at the end of every feeding. My nipples are red and hurting (no thrush). He is given a bottle a total of 4x's a week at the most. They suggested feeding him every 1.5 - 2 hours instead of every 3- 3.5 hours. Even though I explained I feed him as soon as I see signs of hunger and not when he is screaming for food. Well guess what? He won't eat at the suggested time. I've spent all afternoon trying to offer it at 2 hour intervals and he will not even open his mouth. Instead he shuts his lips tightly.
I also change his position while feeding to try and use as many ducts as possible during a feeding. Well they said not to do that and only use the cradle hold while leaning back. I keep thinking that will just give me clogged ducts, won't it?
Hell, I'll try this out but I am not sure I was given good suggestions. WDYT?
Re: Met with a lactation consultant and idk
I'm not alot of help, but we only use the football hold. I do get clogged ducts on my left side, but I don't think that's why. Nothing on my right side--which is the side that produces the most. So I would think you'd be fine with one position?? But I don't know.
He pretty much feeds off of one breast per feeding. I then pump the unused breast and I alternate breast at each feeding. I had looked into a few things on KellyMom but since he does it at the end of a feeding i can't find much.
I kind of feel like I got hosed with this advice
Why are you pumping the unused breast? To create a stash to go back to work? If not, I don't think you should be doing that. It will create an oversupply so if you are away from your pump or something for a day you will be making way more milk than your baby can drink and you will be uncomfy and he will be getting mostly foremilk. If you already have an oversupply and are pumping because the breast he doesn't eat from is overly full and uncomfy, do not pump until empty-- only pump to take the edge off so your body learns to not make as much milk. If you're pumping because you don't think you have enough milk and you want to stimulate more milk, you would do better to pump on the side he just ate from.
DS has been nursing for 2 years and I have used the cradle hold 99.8% of the time and I have never had a clogged duct. (knock on wood!). The LC may have suggested you lean back because your letdown is strong and that can help slow it down so it's easier for baby to eat without choking. I don't know if a strong letdown is a problem you're having, though, if he's only biting at the end of a feeding... But leaning back most likely wil not give you clogged ducts. You may get them, but I doubt that alone would do it.
I would guess that maybe baby is done feeding when he starts to bite and just take him off the breast at that point. If he still seems hungry, burp him, then try again. That might help. And you're right-- only feed when he's giving hungry signals (fussy, eating hands, sucking motions with mouth, etc. You know your baby!).
