Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Straight to a BIG bed?

DD has a toddler conversion on her crib. Then it goes to a full size bed.

I am tempted to skip the toddler bed all together and go to a full bed. Maybe start with a mattress on the floor? Or I guess I can see how high the bed is totally set up and do rails?

I am not really ready, but I am thinking she is getting cramped in there, maybe. She is big, and her crib is big, but she likes to sleep sideways and I am wondering if she is not liking kicking the wood crib?

I don't know! I just need her to start sleeping past 5 am!

Any stories?

Re: Straight to a BIG bed?

  • I am thinking of transitioning DS around his 2nd bday and maybe a couple of months before this LO is born. His crib converts to a toddler bed as well but now I want to use it for the new baby.

Meanwhile I have been eyeballing this adorable toddler bed from Ikea, which I think is a great deal for $89. And all Ikea beds are pretty low so that might work really well.

  • We put our daughter straight into the big girl bed, (twin bed) and she started sleeping MUCH better. She was waking up between 4:30 and 5 every.single.day since November (when I got pregnant with baby #2), and I was really losing it from lack of sleep. Ever since the bed, she sleeps until at least 7 every morning. Of course we had our share of walking her back to bed a few times, in the beg. but its a big change!

Good luck with whatever you choose!! And yes, you need her to sleep past 5am esp. since you are in your 1st tri!

  • We transitioned DD to a twin bed around her 2nd birthday. I tried at 18 months but she wasn't ready. We just put the mattress on the floor next to a wall and put rails up to keep her in. It was a transition, but we wanted her to be out of the crib for a few months at least before her brother came.
  • We did that at 16 months and he started sleeping through the night.  It worked out so well with him.  We use an extra long rail to keep him in.
  • I say as long as you have guard rails, go for it!
