This is terrible!

My co-worker who is the education reporter went to speak at career day to pre-K through 2nd graders at a local primary school.

In one class, he asked the kids what they wanted to be when they grew up. The kids mostly said firemen, policemen, soldiers, construction workers, and factory workers, but one kid said veterinarian. Apparently the teacher called the girl out and yelled out, "WHO SAID THAT!?" The little girl reluctantly raised her hand. The teacher then told the little girl that her answer was stupid, and that she should say something realistic. She said the same thing when another student said she wanted to be a doctor or a lawyer.

In another class, my coworker was talking to the class about how they should make all As and the teacher actually piped in and said that they only had to make all As if they wanted to get into college. WTF?

I spoke at the same school when I was the education reporter and I remember being shocked with how the teachers talked to these young children. I'm thanking my lucky stars that K will never go to this school. I told my coworker he needed to call and complain to the principal, the superintendent and the board of education members. An editorial in the newspaper also might be in order!!

That is completely bizarre! As someone who has observed a lot of classes on the way to getting my degree, I have seen some crappy teachers in action sometimes-but good Lord-never any that bad! That is so strange.

That makes me cringe! Something needs to be done. I can't imagine my child being talked to like that. Please, please, please report her!!!

That is awful! Yes, please, you've got to say something to someone about her. Since when has it become acceptable to "dumb down" our children?

WOW!!! It's people like that who keeps children from thinking they can do anything in life. I would never tell my child or any one else's child something like that.

I would absolutely report them. I had a History teacher (8th grade) that told us we were stupid, that we smelled, etc. etc. on a daily basis. I walked out of class one day and straight to the principal about her. Soon after, she "retired early".

I can't imagine even talking to anyone that way!

Poor darlings!! I couldn't imagine crushing a little kid's dreams like that. Way to encourage them to give up at an early age. I hope she does contact the higher ups and hope she writes a lovely editorial in paper. I'd want to know if my children's teachers were doing that.

Any contact that your co-worker does with the school district should be done in writting. With copies kept in a personal file. Phone calls and even sometimes e-mail can be ignored. Real mail not so much. Especially if you write on the letter everyone that it is going to. Then you'd have to have 3-4 people brush the letter under the carpet. Which then it's a whole bigger matter.

When there was an abuse issue when I was younger that was what my mom was told. That without complaint documentation they couldn't do much because of union and tenure stuff. And the more people notice and send in letters the better the triumph will be.

Generally, when there is a complaint or issue with the newspaper the school board moves pretty quickly. They avoid negative press like the plague.

No wonder so many inner-city children don't think they have a chance at excelling in life in anything other than selling crack. That's just sad.
