Question: Using potty in public & underwear...

At home, DD flings her underpants off onto the floor before stepping up on her stool to use the big toilet.

She will start preschool in Sept. I certainly do not want her doing this in the bathroom at her school. YUCK! How do I get her to stop this? I don't think she can climb up the stool and THEN take her underpants down halfway on her legs b/c the big potty gets in the way. Then she either can't sit down b/c the underpants are binding her little legs, or she sits ON her underpants and might pee on them.

Suggestions? Thanks.

Can you try moving the stool a little further away from the potty?  I know both of my girls can stand on our stool and pull down their clothes and then sit down without issue.  When they do feel the need to undress to go potty, I have always just asked them to put their clothes on the stool or counter and made it a habit.  I know at daycare they also work with the kids to not put their clothes on the floor when they go potty.

  • Both of my kids went through a phase early in the PT process when they would take off pants and underwear totally, like your DD.  Both of mine just kind of stopped doing it on their own, and I never had to do anything about it.

However, since you are running up on a deadline to get rid of this behavior, what about having her just take one leg out?  That way she can spread her legs out as far as she needs to, but not completely lose track of her underwear.

  • Maybe you can just tell her that at home she can do that (my DD does too!) but in public/school, ____ this is how you do it.
