I just got a call from the dr saying my u/s came back saying that I don't just have a low laying placenta but that I have Vasa Previa. I just wanted to see if anyone else is going through this and what your drs plans are. I meet with a specialist next week.

Re: Vasa Previa
I was diagnosed with a similar condition to vasa previa. The placenta has a succenturiate lobe like in vasa previa, but the connecting vessels are in the posterior, not anterior part of the uterus.
Currently I am 24 weeks and I have to go for check ups and u/s every week at perinatology. My doc also said that their is a greater chance that I will deliver early and have a c-section. She indicated that the vessels contecting the placental lobes are similar to the umbilical cord, so it is not likely that the baby will rupture them, but it could happen. The scariest thing she said is that I should never be a long distance from a hospital with a perinatal unit, just in case something does happen.
It's definitely a scary thing to deal with a high risk pregnancy. I already feel so connected to my baby girl, the fact that there is nothing I can do to protect her from this kills me. I hope that your situation is the best case scenario for vasa previa. Take care.
Sorry to hear that you are going through this. I have been diagnosed with velamentous cord insertion, basically the same thing but without the cord being near the cervix (at least so far). I have also been diagnosed with PTL and IC so I have multiple high risk issues so I have been seeing my MFM (aka Peri) once a month for u/s and my ob once a month. I have worked it out so that I see a dr every other week! Since they don't want me to go into labor b/c of the VCI and the cerclage I have, I am currently taking 17p shots weekly, and since I started having regular contractions 2 weeks ago at 17 weeks 1 day I'm taking Procardia and albuterol for the contractions. I'm a HOT mess!! But I think with close watching and lots of check ups that you and your baby will be just fine. All of the literature say c-section at 35 weeks and that's what I'm expecting but my dr's have yet to tell me what the birthing plan is. It seems like the safest route to go. They just don't want you to go into labor. I too was told at 17 weeks to not leave the Houston area b/c if I start bleeding I need to head to the hospital immediately. It may not be fun but I am so looking forward to having this little guy here. Keep us all posted and take it easy, try not too stress too much. I know that's easier said than done.
I hope this helps. GL to you and keep us posted.
Lara!

I was diagnosed with VP in my last PG at 27 weeks. I was immediately admitted to the hospital with constant monitoring and had a C at 34 weeks after several rounds of steroids. While I was there several girls came in with the same diagnosis but were allowed to wait for the C until 35 or 36 weeks. They won't let you go longer than that for fear that going into labor will cause the cord to rupture. As you can see I have a healthy baby girl now. With constant monitoring and a scheduled C there is not too much to worry about, but you will need to be admitted at some point. I know the doctors were concerned as my case seemed extreme. I lurk here to answer VP questions, feel free to page me or PM me.
Take care
