How soon did you start taking prenatals

I know that if you aren't taking them already when TTC you should start as soon as you find out.  My shameful confession: I just started taking them Tuesday which was about the 5th day I knew.  I was supposed to be taking them while TTC but couldn't stand to add another pill.  Now I read in one of the books that the neural tube closes at the end of the 6th week which is the end of this week.  I just hope I already had enough Folic Acid built up in my system.  What about you?  How soon did you start taking prenatals?

Re: How soon did you start taking prenatals

  • I took them while we were TTC, and then upped the dose when we found out.

  • I was on them for several months prior to actually starting TTC. Before that I took a multi which had some folic acid anyway.

I started taking them in January of '09, 8 months before we started TTC.  My friend is a NICU nurse and she told me that as soon as you think you *might* start TTC in the future you should take them.

  • I started taking them at the beginning of the cycle we got pregnant... so not that long, but still before I got my BFP.

  • I started taking folic acid for about 6 months before our wedding and started prenatals the month we started TTC.

This. I started taking them about a year and a half before we started TTC. I just replaced my multi with them.

In your case, depending on your diet you may have enough folic acid from your diet? Do you eat a lot of leafy green foods (I can't remember off the top of my head what else is a good source for folic acid). If so, you should be okay.

  • I have been taking prenatals since I stopped BCP in November

  • I didn't start until after my BFP. We weren't trying to get pregnant, but I was told that everything should still be fine.
  • I started when i got my BFP as well..

  • The night before I got my BFP.  I had a feeling, and so I started taking them.  I'm bad though...I had them well before that and should have started sooner. :(

  • I'll probably be fine, I eat a lot of spinach, asparagus, orange juice, bananas, strawberries, corn, broccoli, and romaine lettuce.  All of which are on the list of folic acid foods.  I was just mainly curious what everyone else did.  A girlfriend of mine told me yesterday she is hardly ever taking hers Surprise which to me sounds like she did here and there at first but now isn't taking them anymore.  So that's what got me thinking about it.
  • I actually took 2 Flintstone Gummy vitamins everyday while TTC (because they taste so good to me!).  And I started with my real prenatals the day I found out I was pg.

  • I have been taking them for over a year.

  • started on folic acid a year and a half ago LOL when we thought we'd like to try, have been on prenatals for almost as long because we had a loss and I just never stopped because they help after having a baby to restore vitamins to normal. I've been hard core about it because the leading birth defect that happens to diabetic mommies is neural tube defects which is why we take all that folic acid. so I always took it just in case we got pregnant by accident and my sugars werent as tight as needed.
  • I started them 2 mos before I stopped BCP, so about 4 mos pre-conception

I started taking them when we found out, which was 5 weeks along.

  • We weren't actively TTC but I pretty much knew I was pregnant. I took a HPT 4 days before the first day of my next period and it came back positive. I started prenatals the next day.
  • I started taking them when we started TTC and it took us 8 months for our first BFP.  However, my baby did have a NTD even though I was taking the Folic Acid.  I know a couple of people that didnt even find out until their 2nd and 3rd month and were taking no prenatals before they found out and their babies were perfectly fine.
  • I took folic acid about 3 months prior getting my BFP, I started taking prenatals about one week before my BFP
  • I started taking them a month before we were TTC. I have been taking them in January and we started TTC in Feb, by April I was pregnant.

  • I started back in Nov when my doctor told me that I was best to start 6 months before TTC. Once I got my BFP, I switched to prescription prenatals. I have been also eating oatmeal high in folic acid for the past 3 months to be double sure.

My DH has a good friend with spinal bifida, so I got a little parinod there for awhile about it.

  • I've been taking the Target brand since Sept 09.  At my appointment tomorrow I am going to take the bottle with me to make sure it's enough, but my doctor basically said "any prenatal vitamin with folic acid and DHA" was fine.  He thinks they are all the same.
  • I started taking them about 3 months before my BFP.

  • About a month before we were TTC and then while we were TTC. So about 2 month before I found out I was pregnant.

  • Well, my dr advised to start taking prenatals as soon as I went of BCP, so I've been taking them since 2006 when we started TTC and just never stopped.  It's supposed to be good to continue taking them while BFing too, so I just never got out of the habit of taking them.

I'm also on extra folic acid and baby aspirin because of my recurrent losses, and was taking Pom pills while TTC as well because it's suppposed to help thicken your lining.  I have quite the vitamin cocktail going - lol!  Let's just hope it all works!

  • Started taking them when ttc started, about 1 1/2 years ago. Added more folic acid after miscarriage, due to DR recommendation

  • I was taking them off and on since I was still BF, but I started taking them daily again when I got my BFP.
  • Although many of us started prior to the pregnancy, many other women don't because they don't even know they are pregnant. My sister didn't know she was pregnant until she was 9-10 weeks along and thus didn't take anything until then. My nephew is still gorgeous. Obviously it is important for you to start now, but don't beat yourself up about it. It is already done. I'm sure everything will be fine.

I started them as soon as we started TTC, so I've been on them for 14 months or so.

  • I have been taking prenatals for what feels like forever.  I took them all throughtout pregnancy with DD, while breastfeeding, stopped taking them when I stopped bf in March 2009, went back on in Nov 2009, got KU in Dec and m/c in Feb, then BFP 2 weeks ago and have been taking them all along.  I added DHA when I got my BFP.

  • As soon as we started TTC in December.  When I found out I was pregnant, I added supplemental folic acid as well as DHA
