Vacation Ideas

Since DH and I have decided to not start IVF #3 in July, we were talking about doing a vacation. It's DH and my 5 year anniversary on July 30th, so we are kind of talking about leaving straight from Chicago (where I'm from and where our family still is) from my nephew's 1st birthday party on the 24th to head out to someplace nice for a week. I have a gazillion United points that we can use, and it would be a nice and relatively inexpensive way to celebrate our 5 years together.

Any ideas on where we should go? I'd like it to be relatively economical because who knows how many more times we'll have to go at this treatment. I'm thinking Riviera Maya or something but am totally open to ideas...

Re: Vacation Ideas

  • I always love going to tropical places.  I have never been to Rivera Maya.  Hawaii is great, but not economical.  I hear Grand Cayman is incredible.

Right now, our next scheduled trip in two weeks is to Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.  A week of relaxation for me and golfing for DH.  We are staying with his parents at their condo.

We plan on going to Puerto Rico at some point.  I want DH to see where my side of the family is from.

And then we want to go to Europe.  DH was born in Germany, but left when he is was 2 (family was in the military at the time).

So we don't have any trips without a purpose planned.

  • My DH loves to scuba dive & maybe look into activities that you can do or a cruise. We stayed at a Sandals Resort, the bahamas. I like the Sandals Resort but I don't think we will go back to the Bahamas.

  • My husband and I went to Riviera Maya for our honeymoon in August and had the most unbelievable time... We absolutely loved it and are already talking about going back there for our 5 year anniversary.  It was so amazing and beautiful.

You can always go on a cruise.  They are fairly inexpensive and give you the opportunity to see several islands.  And because it is summer, you are likely to get a good deal.  Leaving out of Chi is a good thing as well - you are likely to get a good price on a an airline ticket.

I hope you guys have a good time and get energized for the new cycle in July.  DH and I will be starting again then as well!

I'm also trying to plan a vacation! We are taking an extended (maybe forever?) break to figure out what to do next, and I need to get away. This weekend we are taking a road trip to Cape Cod, which will be nice but I also would like a longer trip somewhere international. Europe is so expensive right now, plus the threat of the volcano still happening... and certain areas of the gulf might be affected by the oil spill (which is heartbreaking). Anyway, so we were thinking possibly Costa Rica, which is fairly inexpensive I believe, and has beach plus adventure-type stuff (ziplining etc).

For places we've been in the Caribbean, I'd recommend St Lucia (we stayed at Ti Kaye and Ladera) - we went there for our honeymoon and it was absolutely beautiful. We've also been to the Grenadines, which was also very nice (we got a great deal on the resort Palm Island, which is usually pretty expensive). I'm trying to think where else in the Caribbean to go, so I'd love to see what others have to say!?

  • Savannah is one of my most favorite places! It's definitely not as tropical as is sounds like you may want, but it's beautiful and relaxing and full of history. I also love Charleston, SC though I've only been there once.

Keep us posted on what you decide!! I hope you have a blast!

  • Friends of mine love Guadeloupe. The most $ thing was the airfare, which I suppose you won't have to worry about. They especially loved the French influence and the world class scuba options.

If you're not invested n a beach or tropical vacation, United flies nonstop from Chicago to Paris and I cannot think of any more romantic place on earth.  You could spend a day or two in Paris and then spend a few days in either Normandy or in a chateau in the Loire Valley.  Since the euro is so weak now you might find prices there to be quite reasonable.

  • Ohhh...I'm jealous!  I want to go on a nice vacation with DH. I've been telling him I would love a real honeymoon for our 1st anniversary (June 26) since we spent the week after our wedding at his mother's house and we had his daughter with us - so no "honeymoon" time!!! I'm hoping we will have our taxes back by then - we are getting the first time homebuyers credit, so we will have a little "fun money" after putting some of it into savings. Here's hoping he will surprise me with a nice getaway! I might have to share this thread with him for some ideas on places to go!

I hope you guys have a WONDERFUL time when you go...wherever you decide to go!
