Super sense of smell?

My downstairs was smelling AWFUL yesterday. So gross I had to hold my nose to keep from getting sick. It turns out it was the trash can in the kitchen. But the weird thing is that no one else could smell it.Am I crazy or do pregnant women really have a heightened sense of smell? Anyone else experience this?

Re: Super sense of smell?

  • Yes that is a symptom! My DH is impressed by what he calls my '"spidey-smell' abilities. I have noticed several things he didn't, lol.

  • Absolutely.  I got in my husband's car this morning and said "YUCK! What is that?"  He replied: "It's my new air freshener.  I guess it doesn't smell that good, huh?"

I told him not to worry, because my sense of smell has been extremely heightened lately.  He then remembered a week or so ago when we were in the airport and I almost got sick from the smell of jet fuel and he couldn't even smell a hint of jet fuel.

So, yes, I'm in the boat with you.  Crazy isn't it?

  • omgosh my sense of smell has gone through the roof over the last few days. my 2 year old had gas yesterday and all i kept smelling was poop and no one else in my mothers house smelled it! then my parents dog peed on the rug and i was the only one in the house that knew it was pee because i could smell it! and now im sitting at my parents house on their couch and all i can smell is stinky feet! and my dad just cleaned the couches yesterday! and i know its not my feet! haha

DH has been calling me a blood hound lately..it's mainly food I can smell out
  • Oh yeah totally. I only notice the gross smells though, and I'm really sensitive to the smell of burning. Our toaster oven burned something and for about 2 weeks the smell was overpowering and seemed to consume the entire downstairs of our house, to me, but DH didn't even notice.

  • Yep I've got this going on as well. DH took take home pork shank from a restaurant last weekend and I thought I was going to heave if we didn't get it out of the car ASAP. I am also convinced that this pregnancy has brought on BO, but DH assures me it's just that I can smell everything.

If this is what it's like to be a cat or a dog, I feel very sorry for them!

  • OH yeah! I'm putting out Beagle to SHAME!! I have to wash our bed sheets every other day or I cant sleep because i swear they smell like BO just from us having slept in them!! I usually will wear the same PJs a few nights in a row but NOT while pregnant! my own natural skin scent will make me queezy, and i put on deoderant about three times a day! I am achild care professional and diapers gag me OUT daily now, and i have a poopy proof stomach, but not when i'm pregnant!!

welcome to the blood hound crew LOL

  • omg I went into the tire store yesterday with my dad to get a new tire for my car and I had to leave immediately, the smell of the tires was making me soooo sick.
  • I can smell anything and everything now, which I think is incredible because I have bad allergies and my nose is partially blocked. I can't wait to see what I can smell when I get my full sense of smell back! The other day, DH and I stopped at a strawberry stand and I commented that the strawberries smelled very ripe as we were walking up. He looked at me like I was crazy, but it was like the smell was right there under my nose. I've also had to tell him to lightly put on cologne, since it's now overwhelming to me. It's so wierd...
