help a cding newbie? angry bottom issues...

hello! just started CDing about 4 days ago (prefolds/covers) and yesterday morning I noticed a pretty angry bum starting up... we are now using angel baby ointment on the rash, and while it seems to make him feel better, it's not improving.  other suggestions on helping my little guy heal up or am i just being impatient with how long it actually takes the rash to clear up?  tia!

  • is it just red?  are the prefolds new or used?  what detergent are you using?

I would give him plenty of naked time.  If you breastfeed, I would put breastmilk on it (I promise it works, that's what I used to clear up ds's rashes!!!)

  • yep, just red and slightly raised (swollen- no bumps).

prefolds are used (and dyed), using allen's detergent.

i am BFing- so i will try both of your suggestions! thanks Big Smile

  • you're welcome.

And since the diapers are used, if you haven't already, I might would try to strip them just in case there is a little detergent build up that is irritating your lo's bottom :)

  • When my DS was brand new, he had the same issue. It had nothing to do with our CDs, it was about his sensitive skin getting used to the poop! The ONLY thing that helped was Triple Paste. I used a fleece liner with it and the CDs, and we had no issues at all. Applied it at almost every change. (I didn't use a ton of the cream, though, just enough to cover the sore area).
  • I think the pp's have covered most everything.  My only other thought is to try changing him more often.  PF's do hold wetness next to the skin so you should be changing them every 60-120 minutes (or as soon as he poops).  If you don't want to change quite that often try a fleece liner in them to wick away the wetness.

  • Fleece liners were the real cure for us. And changing very often- like every hour. If he's a light enough pee-er, you could go without the cover so you're aware when he wets.
