Baby Names

Does Tess stand alone?

Love it for a girl and was just wondering if you think it is more of a NN or full name.  TIA

Re: Does Tess stand alone?

  • I tend to think of it as a nn for Theresa or Tessa.

  • I went to college with a girl named Tess, who was a little odd.  That being said, she always said "never name your daughter Tess, everyone calls me testicle"  and that has always stuck with me.

Like PP's have said, I think of it more as a shortened version of something.

  • PP mentioned Theresa or Tessa, and I've also met a Contessa, nn Tess.

LOL, I didn't even think of that!

I think Tessa is much better than just Tess.

  • I like it.

This. Contessa is pretty... you don't hear that name very often!

Either way, Tess/Tessa is such a cute name :)

  • I've heard it as a NN for Theresa and Tessa, but I also have a student this year that has Tess as her full name.  I think it's cool.

  • My niece's name is Tess...just Tess.  I thought it odd before she was born, but now I can't think of her as anyting else.  She is super cute (and normal)!
  • Tessa is on our list, I am debating if it needs to be Teresa; however, our last name has 'ess' in it so we would never call her Tess since it would rhyme, I really like Tessa and I am not sure if I need to throw it out or not.
  • I think it can stand alone just fine. Cute and spunky... but also very pretty and feminine :)

  • Tess does sound like a nn. I have always loved Tessa and Tessy, unfortunately, that was the name of my favorite cat and I don't think I could name my future child after a pet I have had, lol.

  • I think that it could definitely stand alone.  I immediately thought of Tess of d'Ubervilles.  Great book!
  • Totally a full name! I know a few little girls named Tess and my sister is named Tess, too.

LMAO. If this doesn't convince you to go with something longer, I don't know what will.

  • It's definitely a nickname
  • I always thought Tess was a full name.  That's my cat's name BTW, I kinda wished I saved it for a baby girl...
  • Sounds like a nickname to me.  It also reminds me of the girl on Pretty Wild...not a good association!
  • My sister's name is just Tess. So this is an argument for stand alone Tess.

    BUT

People always ask if it's short for something. So this is an argument against stand alone Tess.

    Hope this helps!

  • I like Tess better than Tessa but I agree that Tess sounds like a shortened version of something. And, I would NEVER name my daughter Theresa to be shortened to Tess.
