PSA re: freezing witch hazel pads

I have seen on more than a couple people suggesting freezing pads with witch hazel in them for after delivery- and just my opinion, but it is a great tip!

I know there are probably tons of ways to do this, but I've found a way that worked really great for me, so, since I'm up with LO at 330am and I just made some more, I thought I would share :)

Instead of pouring the witch hazel onto a larger or regular size pad, I put it on pantyliners and freeze those (basically, open them, pour some on or put some on a spray bottle and spray some on, then fold them back up and put them in the freezer) That way, when I go to use them, I just put the pantyliner on top of a regular pad, adjusting it to where I need the "relief". I thought this worked especially well because if one gets a bit saturated, it will melt and the pad below it will help absorb that. And also, you're still bleeding and if the pad is full of witch hazel, it doesn't absorb the blood as well. If the witch hazel is on the panty liner, the bottom pad will still absorb the blood.

This is just what worked well for me! I was blessed with a 2nd degree tear and some good swelling and this seriously felt amazing!

Good luck! :)

  • good idea. i did some on regulars and some on liners.

i also made the 'slushie condoms':

fill a condom 1/3 with alcohol, fill the rest with water. tie, double up & freeze in a tp roll.

the alcohol keeps it from freezing solid (unlike witch hazel pads) so its more comfortable down there. layer over a pad!

(you can also layer witch hazel pads/tucks over the condom (next to the skin) for extra relief)

  • Oooh, I am just entering third tri and I am not sure whether to be thankful or frightened!  I was thinking of posting asking for advice regarding after delivery so thanks!!!!

  • Is Witch Hazel an astringent? I have a bottle I've used forever and it is Witch Hazel Astringent (I use for my face in the summer when I'm sweaty, etc). Is this the right thing to use on the pads? Thanks!

As long as the only ingredient is witch hazel, yep - same thing

  • I have copied and pasted this advice into my files for after I give birth.  I just keep laughing at the idea of one of our partents opening the freezer to find condoms stuffed in TP rolls Stick out tongue
