insulin question- help please!

I noticed that my pen doesn't have 25 units left in it. But I never took another one out of the fridge. I think you are not supposed to inject it cold, right? Should I just take what is left in my pen? Or should I use the cold stuff in the fridge? It looks like there is about 12 units left and I need 25.

Re: insulin question- help please!

  • or my other option is to wait and take it really late tonight once the pen has warmed to room temp? What to do, what to do! :)

  • My mom is a type one and she used to keep her insulin in the fridge when she was on shots.  It gives it a longer shelf life or something...I dont know...She would take it straight from the fridge then and it never seemed to be an issue for her!

  • i take mine cold, doc never said differently... but maybe you have a different type? Then again- my MIL is diabetic and she always does her pen cold...
  • I was just reading online on the Levemir site and it says that taking it cold may be more painful, but it doesn't sound harmful so I am going to go ahead and take it cold. Thanks for the replies and help, girls!
  • i always take mine cold, haven't had a problem yet!

  • Yeah- I am not sure why the nurse told me to make sure I take it at room temp because it really was no different!
  • i was told that it needed to stay cold. i have to bring a lunch box with ice in it when im going out for the day and am going to need insulin that night
  • some formulas of insulin have to stay cold, others dont, even of the same brand. it all depends on what you're on.?

it's ok to take insulin cold, it often just hurts more, however for some people it can also lead to a loss of absorbtion at a site when repeatedly injected with really cold insulin.?

However this isnt really an issue for gestational diabetics since you're only using insulin for a few months of life, it's erally only an issue if you're injecting for a long time.

  • I've never heard the "dont inject when cold" thing. And I've been a type 1 diabetic on insulin for 3 years. It's fine.

  • As long as it's not cloudy, you're fine. I leave mine in my purse and the new ones in the fridge
