Worried, on bed rest and looking for some positive support

I am 29 weeks pregnant today with twins and have been having a terrible few days.  I was admitted to the hospital this weekend for bleeding and contractions.  They gave me the steroid shots to help the babies develop (which totally freaked me out that they gave this to me) and starting treating me with shots to stop the contractions.  They let me go after two days and sent me home with nifedipine.  Not only that but I found I have gestational diabetes and THEN got a positive result on the fetal fibronectin test (the one that tests for premature labor).  Seriously....things were going so well and then this all unfolded.  Is anyone else in this same boat?  How are you doing?  Normally I have things pretty put together, but I am a mess now. I'm worried about delivering the babies too soon....

I started preterm labor at 28 weeks. Went to L&D got the shots to stop contractions and was on bedrest the rest of my pregnancy.

Released from bedrest at 36 weeks.

Almost made it to my INDUCTION date, but went into labor on my own at 37w6d. Good luck, T&P.

    You can do it :)

Hang in there!  I went on bedrest at 29 weeks for contractions and got the steroid shots too.  I delivered at 35w6d not because I went into labor, but because they determined one baby wasn't growing well.  I have a friend who went on bedrest around 28 weeks for contractions and had her babies around 37 weeks.

If I remember correctly, a positive FFN test doesn't mean much so try not to worry too much about it.

  • I got diagnosed with GD at 24 weeks, after having hyperemesis and being on a Reglan pump til 22 weeks.

I started having contractions at 28 weeks and got put on bedrest at home. I was on nifedipine for a few days but wound back up in the hospital with more contractions. Got switched to a terbutaline pump. Wound up back in the hospital again after having too many contractions during an NST, was 1 cm dilated, and got put on magnesium and admitted. I got the steroid shots at this point. I was on mag for 10 days, contracting the whole time but not dilating any further. I got taken off mag and back on the terb pump after gaining 10 lbs of water weight in a week.

I was in and out of the hospital from around 29-34 weeks, the longest stretch at once being about 2 weeks admitted.

Then I wound up with preeclampsia at 35w2d and got delivered. :)

Statistically speaking, being over 28 weeks is really good for the babies.

  • Hey there - I was in a similar situation with the pre-term contractions...I was first in the hospital at 26w6d, but released several hours later bc the FFN test was negative.  A week later, I was back bc of contractions and a shortened cervix - I stayed for a week and was given terbutaline and then nifedipine.  I was sent home on strict bed rest and nifedipine every four hours.  At 31 weeks, I was back in the hospital for another week bc of slight dilation and continued contractions - at this point, I was given the steroid shots and also had a slight scare one night when DD's heart rate decelerated after a contraction and didn't go up quite fast enough.  I was sent home after that week and on strict bedrest....

I ended up making it to 36w6d, when I had an emergency c-section due to pre-eclampsia, protein in my urine and compromised blood flow through DD's cord.

Our twins did great, no NICU time, and are now 10 weeks old.

I know it's stressful, but you can do it - just try to relax (I know, easier said than done)....and really stick to the whole "bedrest" thing - it was really hard for me to literally sit in bed for 10 week straight (except for bathroom, the occasional shower and doctor appointments), but it's really important to just take it easy.

Good luck and keep us posted!

  • i have been on bedrest since 16w because of a short cervix. i had a cerclag put in at 17w and my cervix pretty much hel steady until 29w until it went down to .5 cm. my dr then admitted me to the hospital and i was there for a little over 3 weeks. he let me go home with the caveat that i can't use the stairs at all until after 34 weeks and then we will reevaluate.

i had 2 rounds of the steroid shots, one at 24w and again when i was admitted to the hospital at 29w. i also was on a mag sulfate drip to help with neural development.

this is all very difficult to deal with emotionally but hang in there you can do it. at 16w no one thought i would get this far and now my dr is saying he wouldn't be surprised if i made it to 38w. so stay strong and stay positive.

  • I started PTL contractions at 23 weeks 5 days (same day I got a + FFN test).  They admitted me that day for steriod shots and sent home on strict bedrest.

Edited:  I was sent home on Procardia to control contractions

I also had GD, which I took Metformin for and the last month of my pg, I did insulin shots.  I was able to control my numbers with the medication.

I was able to make it to 32 weeks and I was shocked that the reason that I delivered was because I developed Pre-E not PTL.

I know its scary, but hang in there.

  • I went on modified bed rest at 20 weeks for a short cervix.  At about 30 weeks, I was put on strict bed rest because I had dilated to 1 cm.  At 31 weeks, I went into PTL and dilated to 3 cm.  I was put on hospital bed rest for 2 1/2 weeks and went home at 34 weeks (since they said they wouldn't stop labor at that point).  I delivered at 36 weeks 2 days when my water broke.

I definitely understand what you are going through.  I spent my whole pregnancy worrying about delivering too early.  There are so many stories out there where labor has been put off for quite awhile, so I hope that is the case for you too.  I'll keep you in my thoughts and that you make it much farther!

  • I can't relate to your situation completely, but I was put on bedrest two weeks ago and last week went into pre-term labor.  I had to have a cerclage and am also on nifedipine around the clock.  I was told yesterday that these babies (if they make it), will definitely not go full term.

I just wanted to tell you that we are all with you through this.  Feel free to vent and update us on the good things.  It is hard, but your babies are already so far along - just keep hanging in there for a little longer.

  • I was put on bedresst yesterday, 18 weeks, 3 days because Baby B is not growing as fast as her sister and a shortened cervix.  I don't know what to expect, but I'm am staying positive and praying that this does the trick.  PM me if you want to talk, I have lots of time.  Hang in there.

  • I know it's scary!

I had PTL at 26 weeks (was 1cm dilated), got the steroid shots, stayed in the hospital 4 days, and was put on nifedipine. I was then on strict bedrest at home until my scheduled c-section at 35w1d. So it can be done!

    Good luck!!
