Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Any ideas on how to get a baby to physically lie down to go to sleep?

Ever since DD has learned to sit herself up, sleep has been IMPOSSIBLE!  I lay her in the crib and she flips over and sits right up and cries. I lay her back down and she flips again.  We do this over and over and over and she won't sleep.  I doesn't matter how tired she is she just WON"T lie down. And she can't sleep sitting up. If I rock/nurser her to sleep and try to set her in the crib, she immediately wakes up, flips over and we begin all over again.  HELP!!

  • you're making me nervous for when B can do that.  So I have no been there yet but whenever B cries when I lie him down to sleep.  I always sit him up in his crib (at this point hes exhausted) and play with his little toys in there.  And he sleeps with a blanket (yes toys and blankets - i know - bad) but he'll kind of always grab the blanket on his own and rub it on his face to say "i'm reay for bed now."  I like him down so he doesnt even notice and walk out!! Not the good night i prefer but it works a lot. Its like reverse psychology!!  He is deciding when to sleep.  So maybe sit her in her crib first?

  • Usually DD will just stay down and fall asleep.  Sometimes though she also sits up and cries- we just wait a few minutes and lay her back down, but we just have to do this once.

It works this way now, but the very first time we laid her down by herself she just kept popping up- we chalked it up to her not being tired enough.  Now we wait until she's really tired before laying her down.  If you think she IS really really tired, then the only thing I can think of is to follow the advice of my pediatrician and let her CIO for a while (she said an hour); she said that part of learning to sleep on her own is learning to lay herself down.

If you don't feel comfortable with CIO, maybe wear her down like in a sling until she's a limp rag?  I'm sure you've noticed: an air raid siren wouldn't wake them if they're down deep enough.  Just don't get impatient: wait like 15 minutes or until you can lift her hand and let it drop without a twitch.

  • DS went through a phase of this.. can't remember exactly how long but he did get over it. Now when I put him to bed he does stand at the side of his crib for a while and chats or bounces, but after 15 minutes of playing and chatting he lays down himself and goes to sleep. Sometimes we have to go in and lay him down again if he's getting fussy and then usually he'll go to sleep. Of course some nights he still totally fights going to sleep, but I think that'll be normal for years lol!
Hopefully it's just a phase for you too. We couldn't really *do* anything to get him to lie down during that time period, we just had to keep going in to soothe him (back rub, putting on his mobile, last resort-rocking/nursing him) until he finally gave up and fell asleep. Eventually he just got the idea and as i said now he can get himself to sleep most nights!
