PT and daycare

DD is in PT for well, we're not exactly sure...she was referred for an adducted thumb, but now the PT is working on other issues that she has noticed (like low muscle tone on the right side of her body).   We're seeing a specialist in July.   Our PT has a  list of suggested exercises/movements/tummy activities that she would like us to do as often as possible.   But because DH and I both work full-time, it's impossible to get in all of the exercises before dd goes to bed at 6:30pm.

Do any of you have your daycare providers work on some of the exercises?  DD is at a development lab at a university, so we have a very good daycare, but they are very busy.  We've instructed them to focus on floor time and tummy time for dd, but we haven't asked that they do any specific exercises.   I'm just concerned that dd might not develop as quickly as she could if I were able to work on the exercises throughout the day.

Has anyone else been in this position?

Re: PT and daycare

  • DD is in PT and OT as well as daycare.  Same as you, we ask the providers to do what they can when they can but understand that she is not the only kiddo in the class.

Our OT and PT each do two sessions a month at daycare and the teachers try to participate so that they can see what is being worked on.

I stick to ONE thing (from each therapy) that I REALLY want daycare to work on.  For example, with DD we are trying to teach her how to drink from a straw so they do that at feeding time.  The other focus skill is on one handed walking.

We have a webcam in the center so I will turn it on periodically throughout the day and I am pleased to see that they really do work with her when they can.  Now that I am home for the summer, we are having "boot camp" and really focusing on advancing her skills.

    This is real important.

Could you drop in at lunch and do the exercises? Could you hire a grad student to come in and do them on site?

I could go in at lunch, I've thought about doing that but DD was usually napping over my lunch hour...though lately she's been awake.   Some of the things that PT wants us to do are: help her push up on her arms (while on tummy), moving into a crawling position with knees tucked under her, reaching above her head, stretching her arms above her head, etc...  So I guess they're not really "exercises" but specific ways to "play".

No, I haven't looking into ECI yet. I wasn't sure if I should since we don't have a diagnosis yet.
