Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Could teething really be this bad?

There is something very wrong with my LO and I can't figure out what it is.  She woke up from her morning nap screaming bloody murder and hasn't stopped for about an hour and a half.  I've taken her temperature - no fever.  I felt around on her gums - I don't really feel anything.  I fed her another bottle - still crying.  I've done everything I can possibly think of and she still won't stop crying.  I rocked her in my arms for about 30 minutes, and this calmed her down to just sniffles and so now she is in her crib still sniffling with the occassional wail.  This is breaking my heart.  She is 10 months and still has not gotten her first tooth.  Was it this bad when your LO's get teeth?  I seriously don't know if I can handle this for much longer.  Should I go to the ER or pedi?

  • Sounds like she is cutting a tooth (or 2). My LO screams and fusses a lot when he is cutting teeth. If you are worried though, I'd call the pedi.

  • My DS has had a horrible time with teething, and he screams like crazy just before a tooth is going to pop through. But if you don't feel anything then that?s probably not it. Maybe she has gas. Have you tried mylicon or gripe water?

    This.

I would also make sure that there is nothing wrapped around a part of her body. When my niece was very little she had a hair wound extremely tight around a toe. Her toe was losing circulation and she was incredibly upset. Just a thought, I sometimes forget to give the once over when LO is upset.

  • Thanks gals!  I'm running in to give her another "once over" again.

Def sounds like teething. Monk is a bad teether too. I would give her some motrin to see if that helps. If not I would take her to the pedi.

OMG if this is teething - and we haven't even gotten 1 tooth yet, this is going to be a long and stressful road!  Seeing her so upset literally has me shaking and almost in tears myself.

  • With those symptoms alone I wouldn't rush to the ER, but you could call your pedi if you're really concerned.  Have you tried giving her anything for the pain?  Sometimes teething makes DD cry so uncontrollably that we alternate tylenol and motrin every 3 hours. That is the only thing that helps her when it's that bad. You can call your pedi just to be sure, though.

I would think teething too!  DS has been like this for over a week with teeth #3 and #4.  Far worse than the 1st two so I can only imagine what is to come.

It's been so bad we went to the Pedi yesterday to make sure there wasn't something else!!

I agree with PP's, tylenol/motrin to help ease the pain and lots of hugs and kisses from mama!
