Baby bump or not??

I had my 8 week appointment today. My OB was feeling right around the top of my pelvic area and just under my belly button and he said "Hm, baby's growing really fast." I noticed as he was pushing that it wasn't squishy but pretty firm. I was like holy crap, that's my uterus starting to poke out! Or am I making it up and just hoping it's the start of a baby bump?

I'm going to have to break down and buy DH a USB cord so I can upload pics and you all can give me your unbiased opinions because DH says he doesn't see anything but I can tell that part of my stomach is poking out and can't be sucked in like the rest of my stomach. lol

Re: Baby bump or not??

  • Most people don't show until 18 or 19 weeks unless its their second baby.  So you probably don't have a bump yet.
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • unfortunately you're probably feeling gas bubbles or full intestines rather than baby bump. just because as a rule your uterus grows? by a centimeter per week of pregnancy (this is called your fundal height) and 8 cm would be ?stil really low in your pelvis (the uterus begins nestled low behind the pelvic bone doctors measure from the top of the pubic bone up to check on baby's growth rate between US. But definitely ask your OB either way :)
  • I am only 8 weeks, 2 days and I am definitely starting to show already.  This is my very first pregnancy, too.  It definitely isn't bloat or gas, I already had that and its a completely different feeling all together (and I know my intestines aren't full ;) )  I have noticed (and so has DH) that things have 'shifted'.  Usually my whole torso sticks out the same amount (I'm not over weight, but I'm not tiny either), and now my lower abdomen definitely sticks out further than the rest- and I can no longer 'suck it in'- only the top will suck in.  I can also usually see my hip bones- which I can't do anymore either.  I am short with a small torso area, so that can contribute, too.  But my boobs have also grown at a ridiculous rate also.  I have actually lost a couple pounds so I can't attribute it to weight gain either...

As a disclaimer- we are monitoring for twins!

This exactly! It's definitely not gas because I have already had several bouts of that. I'm 5'3" with a short torso, and my mom said when she was pregnant with my brother that she looked 5 months pregnant when she was only 3 months. It's nothing drastic, like anyone could walk by on the street and say "Hey, she's pregnant," but enough that I notice it's different. I, too, have lost weight but that part stays poking out. Who knows...I'll just enjoy this now before my belly's weighing me down!

I know what they say, and how much we are 'supposed' to grow, like pp said.  But I think like every other pregnancy symptom and things, everyone is different.  I buy my pants bigger in the waist to fit my legs (I'm an avid runner), so I haven't had to buy new pants yet, but I don't need belts anymore.  I'm sure other people who don't know think I'm gaining weight, but its definitely noticeable!!! Especially when I was previously flat stomached with some ab action going on.

  • KeyRyn - my dr said I was bigger than what I was supposed to be too. Maybe you are a little further along that 8 wks? Or I've also heard some pals utes just sit higher normally that others. At 7 weeks I already feel like I'm "showing" (could be bloat, but it's very consistent bloat) but it probably "showing" for us because we know our own bodies so well...
  • Well, when I went for my u/s I was about 6w6d but they said baby was measuring 7w3d so I guess I'm carrying an elephant. Huh? But you're probably right, Whits. It's probably mostly in my head and partially a big uterus. lol
