1st Trimester

When considering names for a baby, there are tests to take.

1. Resume test. If you were handed a resume with _____ name on it, would you scoff them off? Take them seriously?

2 Mean-ass second grader on the playground test. Can you easily tear the name apart and make fun of them for their name?

3. Beavis and Butthead test. Similar to the playground test, but add in sexual innuendos.

4. Stripper test. Could ___ name easily be a headlining act at the local strip club? How about at the local ladies' male revue?

Are there others I am forgetting?

  • There's a website that you can search a name and see user added comments about the pros and cons of the names. But I can't for the life of me remember what the website is. Hopefully someone else knows what I'm talking about!

  • Initials.  Don't forget unfortunate initials.
  • Yes, yes initials. My mom's initials were HAG - until she got married.
  • The "Yell" test

When you yell down the street for said child to come home for dinner does it sound ok.

  • One of the videos we watched had the handshake test (similar to your resume one) and the holler test (similar to pp yell test).  You have to be able to introduce yourself as that name and if it sounds fine ++ also have to holler it down the hall if they're in trouble and make sure it's okay ++  Like I said, they are just like the ones previously mentioned.

I know an ASS that one trumps HAG. Think people, you have 9 months....

  • Think about your last name.  Jack Jackson, John Johnson, and Greg Gregory are not acceptable names.  Also, since our last name ends in "an" we have to think of how a first name sounds with it.  So all names ending in "an", "en", "on", and "in", are out for us.  I thought Roman was a cute name until I realized it completely rhymed with our last name.

  • DH and I always use the Sports Announcer test.  Does the name sound good being announced over the PA system at a sporting event?  Is it sight readable for an out of town game?

    "And at center, a 6'2" junior, _________ !"

Can you tell we were both HS athletes?

    5. The Jennifer/Michael test... will there be 4 other kids with the exact same name in each of her/his school classes? Fortunately the percentages of kids given even the most popular names are getting lower, but I'd still hate to sentence my kid to a lifetime of being Lyla B.

I know I didn't want my dd to have a middle inital that started with s. Just in case she married someone with the last that started with s. So her initials would have been A. S. S. But we decided on Jane so no problems now.

Similarly, the nursing home test.  "_______, it's time for BINGO!"

YES, you totally win with "ASS." Also I have a friend who claims she didn't change her name after getting married b/c her initials would be "KKK." But I think she didn't change her name b/c her husband's last name sucks.

So, you're saying Hymen is a bad choice Wink
  • Someone I worked with met a woman who named her daughter Placenta.  Apparently the women heard the doctor say, and now we need to deliver the placenta, and she thought that was a great name.
  • babynamer.com allows you to see ideas of how a name can be made fun of- VERY helpful :)
