TTC After a Loss

If you see an RE, question for you

Were you referred by your doctor or did you make an appointment with one on your own?

After my fourth loss, my OB and I agreed it was time to see an RE and he gave me a referral at my MC follow up.

  • My doctor referred me for "genetic counseling", but when I called to make the appt, they suggested I see the RE for in depth testing, so a little of both.  I'm very happy with him so far.

  • I asked my OB about it after my c/p and he didn't seem to think I needed to go (even though I had just turned 38 and had 2 losses).  So I just went on my own since I didn't need a referral.

There really is no "rule" on when to go, but I do recommend checking your insurance to see what they require before going.  Some insurance companies want a referral and some don't.

We were basically told that the OB could do nothing for us b/c of DH's SA.  Once he quit smoking his #'s went way up and is now "normal" in the SA dept.

  • I went to one on my own, recommended by a co-worker. You'll want to check your insurance and see if they require a referral. I didn't, but you never know.

  • I was referred for suspected endometriosis around the 1 yr TTC mark.  I believe my RE requires a referral.

    TTC #2 - 6/12 surgery #3, FET #1 & 1.2 = BFN, 12/2012 FET #2 = BFP! DD is 1.5 yrs!
    Surprise! 12/16/14 BFP, loss #2 12/31/14

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • Technically went on my own, but it was actually because my RE recommended that I come see him.  I work in x-ray and do the hsg's  for the doctor I'm seeing.  He asked how I was doing (he knew about my ectopic) so he told me I should have already had an hsg done because of my history.  But I didn't need a referral from my OB either
  • After my third loss, the OB basically threw up her hands and said "Welp, I dunno, there's nothing else I can you for. You should probably think about seeing a fertility doc."
  • I went to one on my own.  My insurance didn't require a referral.
  • If you have an HMO, you will need a referrel.  If you have a PPO, you can make the appointment without a referrel.

If you have an HMO, call and see if your OB can give you the referral or if you need to get it from your PCP.  Mine usually only allows the PCP to give a referrel, but for an RE they will take it from an OB.  However, my OB doesn't even do referrels, they all need to go through a PCP.

    Insurance is awesome.Tongue Tied

I went on my own b/c of my age I had been trying for 6 mos. I have alot of friends/family who tried using their OB to treat infertility and when they finally went to the RE it made all the difference.

  • It is my understanding as far as insurance goes you need a referral from your primary care physicican to go to an RE if your insurance is going to cover it.
  • My OB referred me to my RE after no pg within 8 months of TTC - I was 37.  we discovered DH had slightly low count and mobility.
