Your Docs thoughts on Caffeine...

My OB told me I could have one a day.  I have been having a diet coke here and there.  Maybe one a week but this morning I had to cave and have a cup of coffee.  I need things to start flowing and I thought this might help.  I was just wondering what you were doing???

Re: Your Docs thoughts on Caffeine...

  • The doc that confirmed my pregnancy said that an 8 oz cup of coffee a day is fine.  However, I would be MORE worried about the aspartame in that diet coke- are you drinking the diet coke with splenda?

Honestly, I have had maybe two diet cokes and it was while we were out to eat.  So, I am sure it was the real thing.

  • I drink a diet coke every now and then.  I can't drink the ones with sugar and from what I've read splenda is worse than aspartame.

Oh, I definitely wouldn't worry about every now and then!  ;) I'm a big believer in moderation for most things is fine.

Thats weird, I read that aspartame is definitely something you want to avoid but that they don't know about splenda.  Doesn't splenda just pass through your system?

  • I'm not a caffein drinker because during my last pregnancy I suddenly became super sensative to it, heart palpitations, panic attacks the whole nine yards from just ONE serving! So beware!?
  • My OB says a cup or two of coffee/soda a day is fine.  She also said that aspartame is fine, just no saccharin.  I try to limit both caffeine and artificial sweeteners, but she got me through one successful pregnancy so I trust what she tells me.
  • My doc said 1-2 cups a day is ok, but I decided to give it up completely. It has not been easy. I miss my coffee, and decaf is just blech!

  • I have not had a Diet Coke since my BFP and it stinks! I miss it a lot, especially in the mornings on the way to work. But....I cheated a few times when I had my m/c and I am determined not to do anything I'd feel guilty about if there is a loss this time around. I have actually come to like water more than I did before the pregnancy, so it's probably a good thing for me and baby!

  • My doc said no caffeine until 2nd tri. I then can have 325mg a day. I have cut out caffeine completely and have not had any problems yet. I have been more tired but I think that is because of the baby mostly. I also am staying away from any type of artificial sweetner.

Yea, I read the same things about Splenda and aspartame. Splenda is made form real sugar too. If you are having trouble with constipation, try Psyllium husks is a smoothy every day. It really helps. The powder form is much better.

A little off topic, but I wanted to add my agreement that my doc told me aspartame isn't any worse than splenda, and just to avoid saccharin (sweet n low)

  • My doc said one cup of coffee a day is fine.  She said that she even drank one cup a day during her pregnancies.

The clinical studies show that caffeine in excess of 200mg per day could increase the risk of miscarriage.  Just so we're all clear, 200mg is the typical amount in:

    • 10 oz. of drip coffee
    • 16 oz. of brewed black tea
    • 20 oz. Starbucks vanilla latte
    • 48 oz. of diet coke

Here's a link to a NY Times article about the 2008 study: https://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/21/health/21caffeine.html

And here's a link to a Mayo Clinic site that gives the amount of caffeine in popular drinks:  https://www.mayoclinic.com/health/caffeine/an01211

As for me, I've switched off caffeine completely just to be safe.  I've gone to decaf coffee (when I drink it), decaf iced tea (thanks, Iced Tea Maker!), and lots of water.  I also drink fruit juice and milk on occasion.

    Hope this helps!
