Paging Niki and Other Super Healthy Eaters...

In my post yesterday, I mentioned that my doctor wants me to make sure I'm eating "closer to the root". I do eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, but I will admit that I luuurrrvvvv my potatoes and dairy. I'm looking for any advice you have, what you have learned, etc. in eating a more natural diet. Do you have any books or recipe books that you can recommend? I work a lot, so I need something that is relatively easy to implement (who isn't busy these days?)

TIA!

Re: Paging Niki and Other Super Healthy Eaters...

  • Are potatoes and dairy not considered "closer to the root"? I would think that avoiding processed foods would be the goal with that? Potatoes wouldn't be processed unless they are instant or something right? I'm not sure how the dairy falls into that but I would think organic dairy would be okay?

As for book/recipe recommendations I would look into the clean eating style cookbooks/magazines etc. The focus is on eating unprocessed foods and avoiding chemicals in your foods. They actually have a magazine so you could check that out while limiting your cost before buying clean eating cookbooks.

i bought the clean eating book by Tosca Reno (I think that's her name?).  It was pretty good information - I just haven't had the motiviation to stick with it  (I'm in the feeling "sorry for myself and binging on bad food and drink" stage ;)  )  The only thing I've managed to stick with so far is mostly organic dairy and I'm trying to get organic fruit when we can afford it.

The recipies we tried were good but had some crazy ingredients.  I've heard her cookbook for kids/family is a little easier to cook from.

GL!  I told myself that June 1 is the day I'm going to start eating "better", so I'm interested to see what other replies you get!

  • Check out this blog.

She has a ton of good, clean eating recipes.

You could also post this on the WC board and get a lot of great ideas...eating cleanly and naturally is very big over there right now.

Also, just a quick idea since summer is coming up--grill your fruits. Changes things up and they make great meals! Top your chicken with grilled pineapple rings, your pork with grilled peaches, put both on sandwiches, as a side, on salads...just something that is fun and easy :)

  • I agree with the previous suggestions. I also STRONGLY recommend the book "Real Food" by Nina Planck (or something like that). My acupuncturist agrees that eating real, whole food is the answer, but she also thinks whole milk and butter help regulate your hormones. I don't know, but I've felt SO HEALTHY since I started eating this way - minimally processed food, using olive oil and butter whenever, and switching from skim to whole milk. My weight has stayed the same but I feel like my body really "likes" this lifestyle.
  • I've found some good recipes from Clean Eating magazine. They have a website with a few recipes as well (and a 7-day clean eating meal plan):

  • I'm a strong proponent of this even if you weren't TTC.  Potatoes and dairy aren't inherently bad, but we usually eat too much of them (guilty here too).  Try to buy organic potatoes (they are one of the "dirty dozen" F&V that are worth buying organic) and don't fry, but bake/roast, etc.  And for dairy, make sure you are drinking hormone-free (preferably from glass bottles) and there are studies that show higher fat dairy is better for fertility than skim.  GL!!! :)

  • I drastically changed my diet a few years ago to try and help with my Endo and stay away from any Estrogen causing foods, my Mom's cancer is also estrogen receptive so I've done a lot of research on diet and eating whole foods, and I'm ALL about what your doctor said as far as eating closer to the root.  I try and stay away from all processed foods.

    Few Tips...

Substitute Dairy with Organic rice milk.

If you need dairy, Goat is much better than cow, I use Goat Yoghurt for sourcream, etc... and Goat cheese if you have a craving

    Substitute potatoes with sweet potatoes.

Legumes, Legumes, Legumes, beans, lentils, split peas,etc... It's so easy to make a pot of lentil or split pea soup, I always add a ton of carrots and celery to both and eat it for a few days.

Use different grains like Quinoa, Tabbouli (sp), brown rice, barley, etc...

For cooking, use lots of fresh herbs, lemon/limes, ginger, garlic, etc... try and stay away from any seasonings with sugars.

Raw whenever possible, lots of salads, etc... Lots of veggies and fruits, carrots and celery dipped in Hummus, Apples dipped in raw almond butter.

I don't eat meat so I use a lot of nuts and seeds in my cooking/eating.

Good luck, you can do it!!!
