My mom is radioactive!

So much for spending my birthday with her...after her PET Scan they told her she was radioactive and had to stay away from me. I had to have my sister come pick her up and now I can't see her for 24 hours! Crazy!!

ugh!!!  I'm sorry...I hope your mom's PET scan comes out okay!!
  • Wow, I've never heard anything like that before. What a way to spoil nice plans.

  • Oh, I never thought about that.

I initially thought 'what's the big deal, they did a PET'.  But they injected her full of radioactive glucose and you're pg.

I hope her PET turns out good!  Or at minimum, nothing new.

  • Oh man that sucks! Looks like you and mom need to bust out the web cams instead.

I know I'm glad they told her! I guess she could technically be an arm's length away and it would be okay, but she was so afraid to risk it, she wouldn't come withing 20 feet of me. The good thing is, they live near me so I am able to see her all the time.

I hope they don't find anything new-they have scanned her so many times it seems redundant but I guess this one is extra thorough.

Well that's good your mom lives close.  One or two days won't be the end of the world.

Those baseline scans really do suck, but a PET does have its uses, at least initially.  It actually gives an idea of which lumps and bumps devour all that radioactive glucose and are metabolically active (meaning likely active cancerous lesions and needs to be followed) and which aren't that active and don't take up much (just a cyst or a lumpy bump or a killed-off former tumor, or some other CT contrasty spot that's not worth worrying about).

So yeah, I work with oncology clinical trial data and scan reports.  A lot. Embarrassed
