How do you feel about rain dates for parties?

We're having a summer bbq for my DD's 1st bday (I posted a while ago about it) and I really want it outside.  What do you think about rain dates?  Party is on a Saturday and I want to have it on the Sunday if it rains.  Not sure how I feel about it myself, to be honest.

  • I think it's fine.  Just expect that if that does happen, some people may not be able to make it the next day.  I doubt everyone will be able to plan their entire weekend around your party for a "maybe" chance.

  • I think its sort of annoying as a guest. I wouldn't block of an entire weekend for one party, KWIM? Can you get a tent or something if the weather isn't great?

  • Growing up almost every invitation I got specified a rain date since in those days (at least where I was) everyone always had parties at home.  We're actually planning a rain date for Emma's party (and it's a week later not the next day)  because Julia's first birthday was almost rained out (thankfully at the very last minute it turned gorgeous!

This -- sorry. I wouldn't block out an entire weekend for a little kid's birthday party.

Yeah, I wouldn't either.  Maybe I'll think about getting a tent.  Otherwise, I could just bring it inside, I guess.

    Thanks for the input, ladies!

If you are okay with some people being able to make it and others not, I would set the raindate.  We are having a casual family party, with a few friends with kids DS's age for DS#1's party.  We want people outside at the pool and playset and we set a raindate (wish we did last year).  Some people let us know they have plans on the raindate, that's fine with us.  Some people can't attend the regular date and others can't attend either date... that's just life.  Nobody has given us an attitude about setting aside 2 dates for a kid's party (like some of the pp) and personally, my attitude is come if you can and don't if you can't.

  • I think it would be a little strange.  I would have a back-up plan for rain.

For a birthday party - no.  Sorry but my weekends are also very tight so no way would I block out 2 time frames for a party.  If it rains, I would plan an indoor location as back-up for the same time and list that (unless its your house than no need to list).  I have had my older DD's party in our backyard for 2 years and always have had my inside ready to go in case we needed to move inside.  Whenever I pick outdoor locations for anything, I always make sure there is someplace we can go in case of rain.

  • You should look into renting a tent. My mom had my baby shower and it wasn't that pricey.  Plus if it is a really hot day it gives people a place to get some shade so it could be used rain/shine.
  • We put a rain date down. Honestly, I HATE rain dates, HATE.

This was obviously not my idea.

  • So what happens if it rains on both dates?
