Hi ladies, I'm on CD 88 and just spoke to my dr's assisnant. They want me to come in and have my thyroid tested. I know this is just a blood test, but I don't know anything else, like what this will tell us etc. Educate me?
It will tell you if you have an underactive/overactive thyroid (which can potentially cause fertility problems).
If your TSH levels are high/low they can give you prescription meds that will regulate your hormones.
Good luck with the tests

Yes all of this.
I think the normal range is anything between .5 and 3.5 but I could be a little off on that.
It is usually a very easily treated issue with meds.
I just think it weird that your doc is checking this right now...I guess it could be affecting having a long cycle.
If it comes back normal though, I would have them check your progesterone so you can know for sure you haven't ovulated and check to make sure you are not PG and then they can prescribe something to end the cycle. (Like provera.)

SAIF/PAIF Welcome
Lots of love and luck to my PAIF/3T/IF Veteran ladies, especially my dear friend Zookie. Congrats to Papps, Teach84 and Starbuck on their little ones.
I've had my thyroid tested twice, both in two different times of my life (pre and post BCPs) my wacky cycles and super long periods gave the doc(s) a little bit of a red flag.
As mentioned before, if there were problems, they could potentially fix it with medication.
Thanks Ladies, I too am a little confused why my dr would check this first. But at least it's something. Wish me luck, I'm off to get blood drawn, good thing I'm not sqweemish!

Mine was checked with my first RE appt., and I had it checked a few years ago, also. It showed hypothyroidism this time (my cycles are also very long, and often anovulatory) so I'm on generic Synthroid, which is levythyroxine. The 25mcg hasn't worked, so they upped it and we'll see if it works. It's ok to be on these meds while pregnant, which is nice. Good luck!

OBs/REs like to see your TTC level below 3.
Current phlebotomy standards dictate that a level of .5 to 5 is normal.
An endocrinologist would disagree and say most feel best at a level of 2.5.
