Telling Landlord/neighbours?

I'm just wondering what the rule is about telling your landlord you're pregnant? We really like our landlord but she doesn't live in our building (A house divided up into apartments)

Also we'll have to tell the people who live here as well becasue it really is just an old house made into apartments, you can hear everything. We're not close with the people above us , and rarely run into them, but the rest of the people who live here are nice. Do we just send a big email or something?

Re: Telling Landlord/neighbours?

  • I may be completely wrng, but I see no reason to have to tell your neighbors. We live in an apartment for now and do not plan on telling.

  • Just wondering why you would have to tell your landlord??
  • The only way you have to tell your landlord you are expecting, is if there is a "no children" clause in your contract. Otherwise, there's no reason to tell them.

If you wish to tell your neighbors as a 'heads up', an email would be fine. :-)

  • I'm not really sure why we'd have to tell, I don't think we do...but I would tell them if we had another roommate moving in or something, so I just thought we were supposed to tell them we're having a baby? I mean, I know they can't kick us out or anything, but as far as them doing any repairs or scheduling things like that I think its a good idea for them to know. Last December they decided they would install fire alarms to all the units. Right before Christmas. What a joy.

But thats good then, I guess its not a huge deal :)

  • We live in a house that has 3 apartments, we have the 1st floor, neighbor has the 2nd and LL has the 3rd. I will not be telling him, he'll eventuall figure it out. Im not to worried about things as he most likely will not be here in the winter. I did tell my neighbors on both sides of me though, both in their own houses, and they seem to be chatty with the rest of the people in this house so they may find out.

That's a totally different situation... another adult roommate coming into the home would need to be on the lease and likely need to put down their own security deposit (or an increased security deposit) because they can legally be held accountable for potential damaged to the property. If the LL doesn't specifically forbid children, there's nothing they can do if their tenants do have a child and nothing would change. If a kid messes up the house- the parents take the financial responsibility to fix it- which is why a minor child is no biggie.

Now, there ARE limits on the number of people allowed to dwell in rental units with consideration to # of bedrooms/bathrooms- so if you want to be like the Duggars and have 20 or 30 kids- you'll want to look into that :-P

  • I would not say a word to any of them. It is none of their business and they will figure it out eventually. Everyone who is not my family or close friend is on a need-to-know or until it-is-so-obvious-I-cant hide-it basis.

I don't think you have to say anything to anyone, but I would probably tell my landlord (if I was renting) just so they are aware.  Plus, if you have a good relationship with your landlord its just nice to keep the lines of communication open.  As far as the neighbors go, if you aren't close to them I wouldn't say anything.

  • You have no obligation to tell anyone anything. The only reason I am telling my landlord is that we have been fighting them to fix the carpet and they refuse. There are edges that have pulled back cause of cheap install and there are tacks exposed, I am telling them to either fix or install new flooring by 12/01 cause I will soon have a baby crawling around and that is NOT ok. I hope they listen.
