High-Risk Pregnancy

Injection ladies - who taught you to do them?

I just found out today I'm pregnant and my ob said this time around I'm going on blood thinners right away due to a protein S problem.  Problem is, my doctor is 1.5 hours away and I cannot take off of work the next couple of days to go there to learn to do the injections.

Did someone at your doctor show you how to do it?  Or at the pharmacy?  Or do you think I can ask him to call it in to the local hospital pharmacy and someone there can show me?  I'm really nervous about  having to wait too long to get started since all but one of my losses have been very early.

Re: Injection ladies - who taught you to do them?

  • My OBs nurse taught me how to do my injections. But the pharmacy, I think, was also willing to show me how to do them too. You might ask around, esp at your pharmacy, because I'm sure there's someone closer than your OB that can teach you the shots.

  • My high risk clinical coordinator (nurse) taught me.  I'm certain they can refer you to someone for teaching...
  • I was taught by a nurse when I was in the hospital for my blood clot.  But one of my best friends just started Lovenox and she said nobody really taught her, she just picked up her syringes and started the injections!  I guess its up to you how comfortable you feel - as the pp said, you can certainly find someone to show you how (OB's office, pharmacy, etc) or you could just give it a try yourself?

Good luck!  Please keep coming back to this board for support, suggestions, tips and advice from us experienced Lovenox users :)

  • My nurse showed me how to do them but Village Fertility Pharmacy also has video injection lessons on their website at https://www.villagefertilitypharmacy.com/medications-and-video-injection-lessons. Ignore the specific medication list and click on the applicable video on the right hand side - subcutaneous (short needles into fat in belly, arm or thigh) or intramuscular (long needles into muscle in rear, arm, thigh). Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies!  I found a pharmacist who said he could show me how to get injections even though he may not carry the particular drug I'm needing.  My OB is conferring with the MFM he sent me to for a 2nd opinion before deciding on the exact drug and dosage so I'm trying to get everything in order before he calls to ask which pharmacy to call it in to.

Oh the problems of living in a small town and having to go to a doctor so far away.  I know this is only the beginning.

  • The nurse at my OBs office showed me, but I would imagine a pharmacist could help you out as well.

It really does get easier.  Good lcuk!
