she said MAMA!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)

so on Sunday night MH was holding miss A and I walked by and she said MAMA!!! Big Smile squeeeeeeeeeeee!!!

sooooo excited but I am curious what others think....should we consider this her first word?? you see... recently we went to visit SIL to attend her graduation...while we there, my SIL started singing "bop-bop-bop...bob-bob-a-ran" (from the Beach Boys "Barbara Ann") and she loved it. it was so cute. she'd get this HUGE grin on her face and then she'd start bobbing from side to side. so of course after seeing this reaction, we continued to do it over and over and over again throughout the course of the week :) well, the day after we got back from our trip (last Thurs), she started saying "bop bop bop."  and while we joked that she said her first word ("hi") at the age of 7 weeks, really it was just something that she happened to mutter as she was babbling and it wasn't really said with intention.  in this case, however, she was definitely meaning to say "bop bop bop" since she was obviously trying to imitate us...and she continued to do it several times throughout the day.  i even heard her say it as she was falling asleep during nap time in her crib.

so, i tried to use this to my advantage and started singing "ma-ma-ma...ma-ma-a-ran" to the same tune, figuring if she learned "bop bop bop" that way, she could learn mama that way too (even though i've been repeating "mama" to her 100x a day, trying to get her to say mama since she was born LOL).  sure enough....i started doing this w/her on Thurs and by Sunday night she said MAMA!!!!

so what would you consider her first word to be? "bop" or "mama" ?? :)

oh and can i just tell you how I am just tickled to death that she said "mama" before "dada" b/c i know that most babies say "dada" first b/c it's easier? ;)

Re: she said MAMA!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)

  • Aw - congratulations!!  That's so exciting!

I'm not sure which I would say is her first word. I know I'd want to say it was mama ;)

  • That's awesome! And what a great story for her baby book...

FWIW, I'd go with "bop" as her first word due to the song and then "mama" soon after since that's how it happened, right!

I cannot wait until Libby's jibberish becomes intentional words...my mom and J swear she came into this world saying "mom!"  Too funny.  And she'll imitate the tone of our voice right now..and sometimes utter something that sounds like "grandma"...it's cute.

  • Congratualtions!  First words are so much fun.  Elaine's was "uh-oh!"  I think I would consider "Mama" to be her first word.  It sounds like she was just imitating the sounds of the song and didn't really have a meaning to go with the sounds.  But when she said "Mama" you know she meant you, because you walked by when she said it.  Both are good stories for the baby book though!

yeah, shortly after the "hi" we also heard "uh oh" out of her but it was never intentional :)

I agree with this - the word has meaning and she understood what it was because she said it when she saw you.

    either way - fun stories!

  • Congrats!!!  How exciting!  She definitely knows you are "Mama"!
  • Awwww, that is so wonderful! I bet it melted your heart in the biggest way :)

I agree - and OMG how exciting!!!

  • First words are hard... I feel like it's a moving target, evolving, so hard to pin down what it is! I say CLAIM IT!

In our case, she said dadadadadada a couple months ago but DH wouldn't claim her first word b/c he was not convinced that she knew what she was saying. Even when he walked into daycare and she looked up and said "DADA!" he still wasn't sure. Now she says "Dada" to him and "Ma" to me and also Hi and Nay for No. Um, we THINK. We still aren't totally sure!

So... I say it was her first word!

exactly....a few weeks ago she was babbling and among many different sounds, she uttered "dada" and then a few seconds later "mama" but when DH came home i told him about it and i told him that he couldn't claim "dada" and i wouldn't claim "mama" b/c clearly she had no idea what she was saying and it just kind of came out among several other sounds....but in this case since she was completely silent and then the word came out, i was like "she meant it this time!" :)

  • Yeah... Sounds like she did!

Kind of like when Alexa apparently blurted out Dada at daycare... Except I wasn't there. And if I wasn't there to witness it, then it didn't happen! Haha. I think Alexa's first word was still Dada but we're just not sure when.

I say claim it! She said Mama! Now practice it with her and she'll say it more!

But what happens when she calls DH Mama? Because Alexa calls me Dada as much as she calls me Ma! LOL... SO maybe she hasn't talked yet after all! LOL

  • I don't know about the first word thing, but I think it's very exciting that she's able to say these words back to you!  Very cool!

Aww! Congrats =) Hehe, I'd still pick "bop" as the first word (or even "hi" from before) but her first intelligible word would still be "mama" since she said it to you out of recognition. What a clever way to get her to say mama! =P
