Poll: Buying baby stuff early

What do you think about starting to buy baby stuff early and throughout the entire pregnancy (like diapers, baby wash, powder, ect)?

DH and I have considered just buying a couple of things each time we go grocery shopping so we are well stocked when LO arrives without needing to spend alot last minute.

What do you think?

Re: Poll: Buying baby stuff early

  • It does make sense in a way. I would probably only do it if I saw a real steal because we're just putting a bit extra in savings each month so we can stock up at the end.

Plus, I feel clueless about what I'll need/how much/etc. I guess I'm hoping that with the bigger belly will come wisdom about this, lol.

I think it's a good idea if you definitely know what you want.  I won't be buying a thing until I'm past my 12 week appt.  Once that date hits I'll probably go crazy buying things :)

  • My mom asked if I mind if she buys diapers like every time there is a sale between now and December, lol.  I gave her permission - but that's all I'm comfortable with until I'm a little farther along.  It's not a bad idea though.

  • I am not but only b/c my family and I are very superstitious. I think if that doesn't bother you and you have the storage it is probably a good idea.
  • I think in moderation is good...and try to keep the receipts, that way if you don't use the item, you may be able to return!

You will probably never have enough burping clothes/towels, bibs, so stock up on those unless you want to do laundry every day. (I don't!)  Wipes are good to stock up on too...you will use those well into toddler years, and as long as you keep them sealed they should be just fine.  Diapers are good, but don't go overboard on the same size...get a few different sizes...you never know how fast LO will grow and be out of those small diapers!

We will probably start stocking up towards the middle of T2.  We already have a DS (5yrs old) so I have a lot of the stuff we will need already.  Consignment stores are AWESOME for baby stuff too, clothes, toys, furniture, etc.

  • IMO, I would focus on the big stuff, like a crib, changing table, or even a stroller, just because it's stuff that you'll need regardless of the size or sex of the baby. It's hard to do that with the smaller stuff, mostly because of expiration dates, size limitations, or colors. My friend suggested I not buy any newborn diapers, because it will only be for the first week if any.

However at the end of the day it's your sanity, if it helps you feel more calm having stuff, then by all means go for it.

  • I have thought about doing this but I don't know what I need or how much of it I will need.  With diapers you have know idea how long they will be in a certain size.  We have decided that we are going to buy a gift card to a store and but $25 on it each time we go.  That way we have the money to spend on baby supplies when we need them.

  • I hate all your biotches for having closets big enough to even contemplate this :)
  • This is what we plan to do. We have already bought a few gender nuetral items that were a great price. It helps break up the cost of everything.

  • Yeah we have most of the big items taken care of.  We actually just got the crib.  My parents are getting us a changing table / dresser combo from pottery barn kids.  I have been specifically directed to leave some big item on a registery (by work friends) for the shower they are planning for me (so bedding and swing are on there).

We recently went to babies-r-us and spent an hour trying to decide what kind of bottles we like...so all the little decisions, I think, will take a toll on me if I leave them until my last trimester.

Also, I work for one of the top consumer products companies in the US and we always have a "product sale" every year.  I have a feeling most of my diapers are going to be purchased there (100count boxes for $2-$3 each!).

  • Once I decide whether or not we're CDing, I will most likely start to stock up on those types of items.  I will wait on clothes and gender related stuff after we find out the sex because we're keeping that to ourselves so I don't expect to get anything of the like during our showers.  Once we decide on a crib, I will go ahead and buy that sometime after the NT scan.

LOL, seriously.  We won't even begin to think about buying stuff until we have the baby's room cleared out and have a place to store all of it.

The only thing I'm doing at this point is when I go through the Sunday paper, I save all the baby-related coupons with the year-end expiration dates.  I've found a lot of formula, diaper, wipe, baby shampoo, etc. coupons with 12/31/10 expirations, so I'll hold on to them and use them as I may need down the road.

  • Here is another suggestion as far as diapers and wipes go...my SIl threw my shower for my first.  In the invites, she told everyone that if they brought a pack of diapers or wipes, they would get a raffle ticket.  Then throughout the shower she called raffle numbers and people got little prizes, chocolates, or candles or something small.  We were stocked up on diapers for about the first 6 or 7 months and didn't have to buy wipes till my DS was 11 months old!!  Just a little idea you might want to share with the people throwing your shower!
  • I think buying diapers ahead can be tricky due to sizing needs AND because you never know what is going to work for your child. For example, DD was allergic to something in the Huggies and Kirkland (Costco) brand diapers. It was good I didn't stock up on them!

For me, the only thing I am buying early is gender-neutral clothing when I see a good deal for it (usually on clearance--I think the most I've paid for something so far is $4.50). It seems like there's not a lot out there--everything looks the same, etc. and I want variety. We're definitely going to be "team green" and so I'm keeping an eye out constantly for deals on gender-neutral clothing.

I think it's good to buy in advance, but you have MONTHS to do so and still be in advance. So...I'd wait. But that's easy for me to say, because we're definitely not buying any baby stuff until after we move, which is September.

  • I have already started with diapers and will continue along with wipes. I know others who are also having/just had babies too so not bad... This will also keep me from other shopping until I know what I am having!

This is a brilliant idea!  Will have to talk to DH about it

  • We haven't bought anything yet but we still have all of our big items from DS...we plan on getting a double stroller but that's about it. I wouldn't stock up on baby wash/powder b/c you really don't use a whole lot (and babies only need a bath like 3x a week or their skin will dry out).

I wouldn't buy to many nb size diapers b/c they grow so fast. But we will probably stock up on a few boxes of size 1.

  • I was just talking to DH about this Sunday at Costco. We decided not to start yet specially on the diapers cause my luck the brank I buy the little one will be allergic to lol. But after we know the sex we will start with smaller items.
  • I do not plan on buying anything at all until 20 weeks.
