just call me Mrs Smellyboob

OK so I'm just going to come out and say this: my boobs smell. To the point where it's driving me crazy. I change my breast pads regularly (and my boobs don't even really leak unless they're engorged), but there's still this SMELL. I can't even describe it. It's like B.O. but not quite, and it's definitely coming from the hooters - am assuming it's from the milk? Please tell me I'm not a freak of nature, and if you have the same problem, what did you do about it?

Re: just call me Mrs Smellyboob

  • I don't think you're a freak of nature because I sometimes smell something too.  I think it's just the milk and I notice it when my bra is soaked from leaking milk.  I've kind of given up on using bra pads while at home because they're kind of a pain in the butt.  I can soak through the cloth ones (which I need to get more of) and the disposable ones feel scratchy on my skin so I hate using them.  I'm not leaking spontaneously like before but I do leak when J is nursing so I'll grab one of his burp cloths or a small washcloth and stuff that into my bra on the side I'm not nursing from.

Uh, if I'm the only other one, that would make both of us freaks of nature?  Stick out tongue

The weird thing is, I could understand if I was leaking a lot and my breast pads were soaked, but I'm not...hell, I smell it even right after I get out of the shower and towel dry!

  • Are you taking anything to try to boost your milk supply?  I've heard that some of those can make your milk give off a smell...

Only since yesterday, and it's domperidone, not an herbal supplement or anything. Maybe I'm just a smelly person lol.

I did find one tip online which was to wipe down your boobs with a baby wipe, and that seems to have (temporarily) helped. Not sure why a wipe would be different to a regular damp cloth, but I'll take whatever works!

  • could it be in the middle of your boobs?  Sometimes that happens to me when I wear a uni-boob sports bra (or now, a nursing tank) - but that happened even before BFing, it's more like just from being sweaty in that airless area.

But other than that I haven't really noticed a smell from nursing unless I get milk on my clothes.

  • I don't smell anything.

But I have chronic clogs.  Just spent 2 hours relieving another one!  I think I'd rather smell!

J swears he cannot smell it, but I do.  I am not sure if it's like "mommy pheremone" or milk that has leaked or what.  But yes, to me, it's akin to BO.

  • I was super smelly post partum. I never had leaky boobs though.  I think for me it was the hormones sweating out.  I also sweat like crazy after so I always felt stinky.

Russ always said he didn't notice a difference though.

When I started taking fenugreek I always smelled like celery.
