Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Why the rush to de-swaddle?

I read so many posts about weaning off swaddling.....and I am just wondering why?

Is it because of rolling?

Georgia still doesn't roll, but she also sleeps on her side in a positioner....so rolling isn't an issue for us.

She sleeps in her Woombie, which she LOVES.....and she's almost 6 months.

Just wondering....

I think it's mainly because once your LO learns to break free it's a viscious cycle of them waking up freaking out numerous times a night needing to be re-swaddled

I have also heard a few people mention that isn't recommended either if they roll onto their belly because they may not be able to roll onto their back without their hands free. They could possibly smother with their face in the mattress because of this.

  • we deswaddled mainly b/c LO kept breaking out of her swaddle, and since she needed it to sleep we had to keep redoing it in the middle of the night. we had one with the velcro but she just grew too strong. it was also perfect timing ( a month ago) because right after we did it, it started to get warm. I am glad we're not swaddling her now when its 80 at night. Rolling was a factor, but not the main one. LO can roll, but she almost never does it, at least for now.
  • My rush was I go back to work in the middle of June and would rather have him weaned before I started back at work.  I can deal with sleepless nights now, but I can't deal with the lack of sleep and working full time.  DS outgrew the swaddle me's because he is so long and  was starting to bust out of his blanket swaddles anyway.  A couple times I found the blanket up near his face and although it was the Aden and Anais muslin blankets that still concerned me.
  • For us it was becuase he was breaking out of it every night and waking himself up so it was counterproductive at that point.  The rolling over issue was just going to come up for us soon anyway so we thought it was time!

  • For my son, it was because of rolling concerns and the fact he is a National Swaddle-Busting Champion.  He started waking himself up constantly when he'd bust an arm out and then inevitably have it sproing up and thwack him in the face.

  • For me, it 's because I have noticed DD waking up frustrated b/c she is trying to move her arms around and break out of the swaddle.  Otherwise, it would not bother me to keep swaddling her.  She hasn't rolled yet, but is getting close, though.

  • I thought we would be swaddling much longer frankly. It worked really well for her first few months.

we decided to deswaddle because it was the path of least resistance during the last few weeks because she started to raise bloody hell everytime we tried to swaddle her for the night. bedtime was becoming a stressful loud chaotic time, which was counterproductive.

plus she immediately starts to try to escape wriggling out her hands and by hiking her feet up and kicking out of it. the morning i heard her wake up and her swaddle blanket was completely unravelled and up over her face very quickly told me she was no longer benefitting from the practice really.

honestly for the short time we've had her deswaddled, she's been doing pretty good sleeping. i don't see a major change in her sleep patterns. plus the sleeping position she has adopted post-swaddle is hilarious. she puts her hands behind her head like she's peaced out on vacation. my husband calls her 'the king of leisure'

DS does the same, like he's chillin' in a hammock.  His latest favorite is to grab onto the crib so he can sleep on his side.

  • DD never liked being swaddled so we never did, but i read that you are not supposed to swaddle them once they start moving around--it inhibits their motor skills.

  • I wasn't in a hurry, especially since my LO is such a good sleeper.  However, he was just starting to grow out of his swaddle, I was worried about him overheating now that temps are warmer, and he will inevitably start rolling soon.
  • mine was purely the rolling over thing. LO can roll from her back to her tummy, but isn't very good about rolling back.  I think that even if she was in her swaddle and rolled to her tummy, i think she'd be able to turn her head so she's not suffocating, but i didn't want to take that risk and another concern was that she wouldn't be able to sleep on her tummy and then i'd have to go in there and roll her back.  I just thought it was time for her to learn to sleep without it.

I'm glad you posted this question.  Until the rolling becomes an issue or they are uncomfortable in a swaddle, why NOT swaddle? DS has not completely gotten rid of the moro reflex yet so he's still in his Woombie at night.  He does do pretty well unswaddled for naps during the day though (with me "helping" to soothe him back to sleep some times).
