Food Substitution on low GI

I started reading my Complete guide to PCOS the other day and have been looking at labels a lot more. I noticed how much sugar milk has in it so I switched to Soy milk. What foods have you substituted?

Re: Food Substitution on low GI

  • One of my favorite books.

Keep in mind ALL dairy is high in sugar.

I use UNSWEETENED organic valley Soy milk.  Don't buy "silk" brand.  They are a crappy company.

Other than that Agave nectar is a great sugar substitute (also stevia).

And lentils are the perfect protein.  They should be your best bud.

Let me know if you have any q's about this.   I feel pretty knowledgeable on the topic. :)

  • I cut out sugar completely (unless some natural sugars) and so I have made a ton of subs.  I drink Almond milk actually and love it.  I also switched out whole grains for white bread, splenda for sugar when needed.  Other than that I just buy different products that contain no added sugar rather than the crap I use to buy.

If you could just come make my meals for say the next 6 months, Id love that! ha ha Its so hard for me to eat the way I should when DW is SO picky! I almost have to make a whole other dinner for us when she wont eat brown rice or fish etc etc.

  • Ive also been really looking at the 5g of sugar or less a serving. I looked at my yogurt this morning and it has something like 26g! and that is the light low fat one!!

Now that you are looking you will notice that lots of "low fat" foods are high in sugar.  I tried and tried for years to do low fat diets and didn't drop any weight and sometimes put weight on.  I think it is because of my PCOS and how my body reacts to sugar.  When I went on SBD and dropped the sugar, the weight fell off.  Good luck!

  • I googled "insuling resistance diet" since I have IR. They list a whole bunch of vegetables & nuts & meats that are good & also list "ok" foods & "bad" foods. They do mention that vitamin D milk is better than a lower one if anything but milk isn't preferred. I have milk still though with cereal. I watch my portions on potatoes & pastas &  breads.

Yogurt has a lot of sugar. I get the yoplait light & i think its 14g sugar & 19g carbs
  • I may just cut out the yogurt all together. For breakfast here at work the children usually have a really healthy all organic no sugar added oatmeal's with fruit etc etc. I may just start eating what they eat. Im also finding it hard to cut down the bananas, as I love them so much!

  • It's surprising how much sugar is in what we think are healthy foods. I think fruits are ok, it's more a natural sugar vs eating a donut. I snack on apples with sm. pb, we have special K bars that are about 14g sugar with a yogurt, carrots with sm amt of ranch dipping. I look at alot of labels & it's expensive to eat healthy. DH is SO PICKY on eating, I will make more vegetables for me & pasta for him, he doesn't like alot of veggies.

Steel cut oats with dried fruit or a bit of stevia on top is perfect for the morning.  Make a big batch on Sunday night in little containers and yum-yum all week long!
