Driving while 40 weeks pregnant?!@

I went to run some errands (local), stock up on pre-natals, some iced coffee, yoga pants etc. I was stopped by a woman in parking lot who told me she called the cops on me since I am abusing my un-born child by driving with such a big belly.....I smiled and thanked her for her concern and walked away (thats the kinda gal I am).

who is driving or plans to ocntinue driving at 40 weeks?

  • why wouldnt you keep driving?

  • That is insane. I drove myself to the hospital to give birth 10 days after my due date with my DD. I will also drive myself to the hospital this time, but I will be 39 weeks, so maybe that is a little better.

Most of the women I know drive all the way through their pregnancy. What are you supposed to do at the end, hire a driver?

  • Ha ha ha, i'd like to know what the cops said to her!  I'm 39 and havn't even thought about not driving.
  • What a psycho.  I will still drive at 40 weeks (if I make it that far).

  • Wow!  I drove until I was induced at 41 weeks with DD... besides the upside-down 'Jeep' logo on her back she seems fine...
  • she was a quack.., she kept telling me how dangerous it was...blah blah blah!
  • I bet that lady got laughed at by the cops lol. I'm still driving at 38 weeks.

  • Um... ok?  I plan on working until I go into labour.  I suppose I shouldn't be doing that either eh?  Quick, someone call child services!
  • OMG - are you serious? I don't even know how I would respond to something like that. I'm 39 weeks 4 days today and am still driving - how odd!

  • LOL - what are you supposed to do, sit inside until the baby is born?  I drove until I had my son at 41w4d.  I even got pulled over for running a yellow light at 41 weeks.  It's legal to drive while pregnant.

Are you KIDDING ME?  What a wacko woman!

I drove the night before I had DS (39w1d).  In fact I drove all over, I went to the mall, Target, WalMart, the grocery store AND a restaurant!  I considered driving myself to the hospital the next morning after my water broke because I didn't want to call DH home from work if it was not, in fact, my water (he is in the Navy, his entire department on the ship would have known they sent him home because I peed myself, luckily that wasn't the case).

You are a nicer person than me, I would have probably told her exactly where she could shove it in very descriptive words.

  • there aren't any laws in NJ that would prohibit me from driving... some women don't drive as much because if the air bag deploys or something happens the belly is so close to steering wheel.....but I didnt think it was serious enough to call the cops :)
  • You should have said "excuse me, I'm not pregnant".

I wish you were kidding, but I'm afraid you are not.

I am constantly amazed at the stupidity of others.

I will continue to drive until I'm in labor...heck if it's not bad and my husband is already at the hospital (for work) I will probably just drive myself in.

  • looking back I should have thrown my coffee on her....she just caught me off guard. she practically wouldn't let me in the car.... it was very strange. I do plan on driving until i go into labor....i can't afford a driver!

that is great!!! i should have

  • I would have loved to be on the other end of that phone call.  And to answer your question, no plans of stopping driving til I go into labor.

  • How crazy.  I can't stand that people feel like they can tell you anything when you are pregnant.  I drove until I was 41 weeks with #2 and was even in early labor as a I drove myself home from the store that day (while taking care of #1).  I plan on driving until I am in labor this time too.  What else are you suppossed to do?  People at the gym look at me like I'm a walking time bomb.  In fact, people everywhere look at me like that.  Like my water is going to gush out all over them and they are going to have to deliver my baby:)

  • um seriously?  What a weirdo.  i was still driving PAST 40 weeks with DD, since i did not have her until 41 weeks.  I'm working right up until i have this baby, so i'm obvoisly still driving now.

What was her concern?  That you would go into labor while driving and crash the car (because labor goes from 0 to 10 in 5 seconds, right?), or that the car would somehow hurt the baby (in which case, how does she propose you get to the hospital when you go into labor, as being a passanger could potentially be just as dangerous?).

You should have said, "so you're going to take me around town so I can get things done right?  You're volunteering to be my driver??"

  • lame!  I had to go to the DMV to get my license done ( yuck picture!) on my due date and the lady asked me if I should be there?

My response was, where else would I be?  Indifferent

  • Uhh I just got back from running to the bank and the post office and a few other things.

Why would I stop driving just because Im about to have a baby? I wear my seat belt under the belly and I did move my seat back a bit so that there is still a descent gap between me and the wheel.

I cant believe she called the cops on you... that is crazy

This is the funniest thing I have heard all day! lol. What a crazy lady! There are women in the military that can't go on maternity leave until the baby is born, how do they get to work? haha. I love it!
  • People need to mind their own buisness.

I worked with a doc who's water broke while she was seeing appointments (I work in a veterinary hospital, it almost hit the dog, would have been classic) changed, finished seeing the appointment and then preceeded to drive herself home which was about an hour away, pick up her husband, and then go to the hospital. It was her first, she has the craziest pain tolerance, and she delivered med free a couple hours later.

If my husband is at work I plan on drving myself to the hospital, he works down the street from the hospital, it would take him twice as long to come get me and then drive back.

Also, who saw the lady who gave birth while driving 70mph?

  • Abusive? I think not! I'll drive until I deliver.
  • That is so nuts that she said that!  I will drive until I pop!
  • WTF, was she serious? Yikes. There is definitely no reason not to drive. LO is probably safer in your belly than in the carseat he'll be in next week.

  • Good gawd it is not like babies come exploding out Alien-style! I remember these type of lovely comments during my 1st preg - I drove & worked up until the day my water broke despite my co-workers acting like I was some type of invalid.

I'm now 39wks+ and not only am I still driving but doing it with my toddler in tow, gasp! I'm not going to be taking any roadtrips but since I seem to have misplaced my household staff, life is business as usual until LO starts pushing her way out...

  • Seriously??

I'm driving at 40+++ weeks! People on the street and their comments...grrr!

  • Indifferent WTF?  Luckily you're a nice woman because I would have told her where to stick it!
  • thatis crazy i wouldve laughed in her face im 41 weeks and 1 day and went driving all the way to the stores yesterday ( i live in the middle of nowhere im 45 min away from the closest sopping and 1 hr and a half to the hospital)
  • That is hilarious! I wonder if I can call in to work today and tell them I can't make it since I'm passed 40 weeks and shouldn't be driving!

  • You should've told her that you were going to call the cops on her because someone so stupid shouldn't be driving!

Yes, I plan on driving until I have this baby too!

  • WTF? Was she being serious? Weirdo.

I'll be 40 weeks tomorrow and I see no reason to discontinue driving. I have also been making semi-long trips (little over an hour) to the next state over to visit my dad who is up from FL and am planning on going down again tomorrow if I feel up to it. If I go into labor, he'll drive me to the hospital... I'm not worried.

  • That's crazy. I was still commuting to work past 40 wks with my first.
