to all the moms who work at home or have your own business...

What do you do? I am currently looking for something where I can work out of my home. I know there are a lot of scams out there so I was wondering if there are actually anything legit out there.

  • I do not currently work from home, but I have a possible lead on a position with our local EI program. It's a full-time position working from home but you're still a state employee with full state benefits. Most of the coordinators in the program work from home 3-4 days/week and do home visits 1-2 days/week.  Keeping my fingers crossed!

ETA: I used to run a home daycare so that I could work from home when my oldest was a baby/toddler.

  • I do freelance web development (application programming, not web design) and iphone/ipad/ipod app development.  I try to limit that to about 15 hours a week, on the days my DS is in school.

I also have a print design business, which I mainly do at nights, and which turned out surprisingly well; I did not expect it to be this big so soon.  Most of my orders are local, but I also sell on etsy.  You might try etsy if you have a skill that can produce products for a niche market.  I know some of the sellers specifically developed their skills for etsy, so you could always pick up a new skill, if you are already creative and handy.

Most of the working moms on the working mom board that work from home work for the companies that they have been at for a long time, doing the same job but were able to get the flexible schedules.  I work for a large company in the recruitment department as a coordinator, used to be a recruiter.  Our company is very big on WFH and most of our department does this either part time or full time.  I work from home 2x a week.  Within my company, it really just depends on the job and the policy around that department as for as WFH.  We even hire nurses that do call center work from home FT.
